the “wagon” part is going to shorten the list considerably. If a hatch like the Mazda 3 is acceptable, maybe take a look at it. Mazda cars generally have above average handling.
I’m in the same boat as you, amigo. Bought a 2014 Passat TDI after I posted about how shitty my Audi was getting a few months ago. Been absolutely loving the car. Personal record of 55mpg on a recent beach trip.
Paid 18,500 for it and buyback offer is like 27,600. Really considering just trading it back in for another Passat right now, just keeping an eye on the used car inventory for something nice.
Would prefer to keep it because its a freakin awesome car but might be crazy to pass up the buyback cash.
Previous owner has 45 days to claim some amount of the buyback cash, like 3500 or so. Gonna wait and see if they claim it or not before I decide anything.
Get a gas VW, there’s nothing else in the price range that is as enjoyable to drive. You already know to open your wallet anytime you go in for repairs. But, I’ve owned 3 VWs and if I get another car, It will be a VW or Audi.
My aunt had one of the ones they made towards the end when they were all sexy and sports-car-ified, but still had a hatch. She gave it to me for my college car and I was the only one in our group with reliable and somewhat attractive transportation. I owe several lifelong friends and my first boyfriend to that Cougar.
I was going to suggest a Russian Blue - classic, understated, beautiful color, and generally docile.
Seriously tho, my husband had a delightful VW Passat wagon (gas) for about 6 years, and it was great. Lots of space, drove very nicely for the length, had a turbine and a sport mode that smoked (and killed your fuel efficiency) and looked classy and well-balanced.
I had a Volvo v70 which I also liked, but it didn’t have the same driving punch - was reliable and attractive, but not exactly fun to drive.
Thanks, Jonathan Chance! And Marion Wormer, Maine Coons are great cats.
I don’t think we’re mortally opposed to another VW. I hope they’ll offer good deals to current owners…
We have had a good experience with maintenance on the VW, part of the reason we liked it in the first place was reading on Consumer Reports that they had gotten more reliable. I’m not really sure how the latest kerfuffle factors in to that.
BMW or Audi seem like good choices, except for price–I feel like it would be twice the money, and a second mortgage if you need repairs. Am I wrong?
I’m willing to look into Mazdas so thanks for that recommendation.
