I will check out that other bright eyes song. I listen to something vague like every day. the words and the music are so beautiful.
it expresses feeling in music that I can’t say in words. i’m not angry at him.(bf) I love him and it hurts…he’s gonna end up with someone else so it was all in vain. everything reminds me of him and it’s like a pin in my heart. he was just here last night and now he is gone… ok… sorry… I will pull myself together here.
How Do you Tell Someone You Don’t Love Them by Cowboy Mouth. A little more upbeat than most, but still the same story.
You just need to listen to the ENTIRE Rumours album by good ol FLEETWOOD MAC.
Go Your Own Way is the best kiss off song in history, and Dreams is great because the girl in the song is saying “Ok, go ahead, but you are going to turn around one day and miss me”
I love that she’s confident and not all crying and pitiful and needy.
“When the rain washes you clean you’ll know”
You just need to get into Stevie Nicks. She’s the Queen of the tragic romance star-crossed lovers break-up songs. She’s been breaking up with Lindsey Buckingham for going on 25 years now…check her out!
Actually, Barenaked Ladies’ WAGB is more about finding one’s own identity and dealing with societal and personal pressures. They do have some good relationship songs, though, such as Blame It On Me, Thanks, That Was Fun, and my personal favorite, Off The Hook.
Goodbye — Elton John and Bernie Taupin
And now that it’s all over
the birds can nest again.
I’ll only snow when the sun comes out.
I’ll shine only when it starts to rain.
And if you want a drink
just squeeze my hand,
and wine will flow into the land
and feed my lambs.
For I am a mirror.
I can reflect the moon.
I will write songs for you.
I’ll be your silver spoon.
I’m sorry
I took your time.
I am the poem
that doesn’t rhyme.
Just turn back a page.
I’ll waste away.

u2 - with or without you
pearl jam - black
you will be lesser without these songs. get them now.
Two songs by Roy Orbison are mentioned and not one of them is It’s Over, my long time sad mode favourite.
And there’s always The End of the World.
Non-Alignment Pact - Pere Ubu.
There’s a Ghost in my House - cover version by The Fall
Rid Of Me - PJ Harvey (good for the “argh ya bastard” moments)
Take your pick from Portishead’s second album, Portishead.
Ryan Adams (NOT BRYAN!) is a good singer for this kind of thing in a more traditional singer-songwriter sort of way.
In my opinion, the best break-up song EVER was written by Monteverdi in 1638. It’s known as Amor, dicea (the first words of the song and as Lamento della ninfa because it is a nymph’s lament. It starts of with male voices setting up the situation, then the soprano voice comes in and gives it some real heartfelt lamenting.
“Ne mai si dolce baci de quella bocca avrà né più soavi … ah, taci, taci, ché troppo il sa”
“Never will he have such sweet kisses from such a mouth, nor more gentle ones … ah, hush, hush, he knows that too well”
“Mental Revenge” by Mel Tillis is a great one for this.
Or this one: Sorry, I’m a bit behind for work and don’t have time to search, but since this is the SDMB Cafe, somebody will fill in the lyrics, title, and artist shortly, I’m sure:
“I knew that you’d been cheatin’ from the start,
Now I’ve flushed you from the bathroom of my heart.”
Then there’s “Long Ago and Oh So Far Away” by The Carpenters, but the first two will make you feel better.
One of my favorites if you’re in a mad mood is “Run Shithead Run” by Mudhoney (on the soundtrack of “With Honors”). And Alanis Morissette has great pissed-off music as well. And Poe is good for attitude music.
Hang in there!
What about Break Your Heart?
I suggest a classic one-two punch by Sugar, Explode and Make Up and The Slim, preferably the live versions off Besides.
Ah, the canonical. Thanks for the reminder.
Shut up and drive By Chely Wright
Or the classic Crying (I like Don McLean’s version)
The first helps you feel good; the second is simply a wallow in it song.
I think my personal favorite has to be:
Please Me Like You Want To - Ben Harper
Two from Elton John’s latest album:
I Want Love and This Train Don’t Stop There Anymore
From the Old 97s
Valentine and If My Heart Was A Car
I’m in the middle of a Divorce so I understand your pain.
I just went through a breakup too–not the worst I’ve been through, but still, not fun. I went through one a few years ago that was pretty horrible, so here are a few I remember from that:
Songs:
Breaking Us in Two by Joe Jackson–one of the very best breakup songs.
Stick in the Mud by The Jayhawks–“You got me down on my knees/begging you please don’t leave”–just heartrending.
Records:
I second the suggestion of Richard Thompson as well: Shoot out the Lights. This album, the result of a divorce, is my candidate for Best Breakup Album Ever.
Although I’m not a big fan of Tom Petty, his album Wildflowers is another incredible product of divorce.
I’ll post more if I think of them.
Amidar
The song “All Love is a Lie” by pete. (that’s their name, pete.) never fails in getting me thoroughly pissed off at something. It’s good for turning your depression into something more constructive, like anger.
For complete, heart-rending agony, try:
Kate Bush - You’re the one
And my recent favorite; if you can find it, play it repeatedly, for the next few weeks.
Kind of Like Spitting - Catch the Redeye Out of Girlfriend Land
“I have seen trains pass by without you before. I have bought groceries without you before.”
I hope it helps.
Here’s one for the “acceptance” stage, when you’ve finally forgiven him: “Kite,” by U2 .
I second the recommendation of Alanis Morrissette , especially her Jagged Little Pill album.
Stay strong.
Crying - Roy Orbison
Dream You - Roy Orbison
I Still Miss Someone - Johnny Cash
Soul and Inspiration - Not just the song, the album - The Righteous Brothers
See The Lights - Simple Minds
Rush (Soundtrack) - Eric Clapton - One whole side of the album is great blues instrumentals by Clapton…
That Lucky Ol’ Sun - Ray Charles
One More Minute - Weird Al Yankovic
The Thrill Is Gone - BB King
Life Without You - Stevie Ray Vaughan
Texas Flood - Stevie Ray Vaughan
The Sky Is Crying - Stevie Ray Vaughan
Why Should I Cry For You? - Sting
Or find some old traditional Celtic music (NOT Enya) - there’s always unrequited love and folks dying all over the place, doomed causes, heroic sacrifices…no wonder they invented whiskey…
Bonny Portmore by Loreena McKennit is a good, sad Celtic song, and brings a lump to the throat, even though it’s about a tree, not a person…
Of course, you should be careful with the Celtic tunes…they might bypass your broken heart, stir up your passions, and make you want to fight the English…
