gex gex, good call on Hello and Goodbye… I was trying to come up with some appropriate Ataris songs and couldn’t think of any right away. JEW is good too – (Jimmy Eat World) – their whole album Clarity has always had sort of a cathartic effect for me… it’s incredibly emotional music. Songs like Crush and On a Sunday really make me sad. Out of Reach is definitely my favorite Get Up Kids song, but is it really a broken heart kind of thing? I mean I guess the song is sort of about that, but I dunno if it’s one of those things you want to listen to when you’re feeling down, in the same way. And Mass Pike is just so cheery, with those keys in the background.
At any rate, secretkeeper78, do check out Bright Eyes, and I hope you feel better. gex gex’s recommendations are all great too. And if you (or anyone else who’s interested) are looking for divorce-type broken hearted songs, Bright Eyes’ label mates Cursive put out a whole album on the theme of an intense relationship gone awry, check it out, it’s called Cursive’s Domestica. Beautiful, amazing stuff.
Stevie nicks and roy orbison are on the top of the list for me.
roy sings my pain so well.
crazy4chauncer- with honers is one of my favorite sound tracks
Dagnabbit, cmkeller! I was hoping nobody else would mention Look Away! (Although I think that was Peter Cetera during his solo career, after he left Chicago.)
"When you called me up this morning
Told me about the new love you’d found
I said ‘I’m happy for you
I’m really happy for you.’
But if you see me walkin’ by
And the tears are in my eyes
Look away … baby, look away.
Don’t look at me, I don’t want you to see me this way."
Another good song that I don’t think anybody’s mentioned yet is Phil Collins’ Throwin’ It All Away.
“Someday you’ll be sorry
Someday when you’re free.
Memories will remind you
That our love was meant to be.
And late at night, when you call my name
The only sound you’ll hear,
Is the sound of your voice calling
Calling after me.”
Sorry about your pain, secretkeeper78. I’ve had my heart shattered twice, and I’ve broken a couple myself. It ain’t fun no matter which side of the equation you’re on.
come to think of it, pretty much all of the ataris’end is forever is great for break ups. come on, cry your eyes out and sing along to
‘love is overrated/ it leaves you devestated/ heart ripped in two’
(road signs and rock songs)
ya, White Lightning, i wasn’t exactly sure about ‘out of reach’, but it’s very sad, and since the mood was right, i thought it’d be a good recommendation.
i rekkens that i’ll have to check out bright eyes now, considering the taste you’ve shown
and to close, i simply must post the lyrics to ‘mass pike’. the keys might be cheery, but lyically i still think it’s one of the most beautiful break up songs ever.
*i wonder when i wander home
if i’ll be fit to drink alone
sleep with my memories
pictures, apologies
for every minute yesterday
regret reminds me anyway
if i remember anything
i’ll make mistakes again
last night on the mass pike
thought i was losing you
last night on the mass pike
i fell in love with you
i will declare a holiday
the night that she turned me away
i’m drowning in my miseries
it solves everything
last night on the mass pike
thought i was losing you
last night on the mass pike
i fell in love with you*
I have to second New Found Glory’s “Hit or Miss” mostly just because I really like the song (other then the annoying bit at the beginning…) but it is a good break up song. Strange, I just went through a nasty break up and I didn’t even notice till now what it was really about.
Anyways, to chime in on another recommendation, I love Alanis Morisette, but -only- her Jagged Little Pill album. The rest, frankly, suck, in my opinion. In particular, I recommend “You Oughta Know.” And maybe, when you feel a little better, “You Learn.”
The other song that I haven’t seen mentioned here yet (I’m suprised…) is “In the End” by Linkin Park. Yeah, that stupid little nu-metal band that outsold Nsync. It’s a suprisingly beautiful and gentle song that really touched me for some reason. It reminds me painfully of my recent breakup – it described it so well. Maybe you’ll find some comfort in it as well.
“I kept everything inside
and even though I tried
it all fell apart
what it meant to me
will eventually be
a memory
of a time
I tried so hard
and got so far
but in the end
it doesn’t even matter
I had to fall
to lose it all
and in the end
it doesn’t even matter.”
You’ve probably heard it before. If it doesn’t make you ill from being overplayed to death yet, I advise you to listen to it.
There’s a new song by Dashboard Confessional called “Screaming Infidelities”, Couple of songs by Weezer, Something Corporate song “Konstantine” Incubus “Nice to know you”, Rentals "Love I’m searching for (acoustic)…that should keep you busy for a while…
