Friends report he was scheduled to be married soon. Friends and family report they were certain the self-slaughter was in reaction to the election, either a protest or an act of desertion.
OK, can we all calm now and stop acting like this is the end of the world? One person already bought into the hyperbolae and killed himself.
Anyone that would do this is an idiot to begin with. My guess is that the election results just gave him the excuse he needed to express his stupidity to a large number of people.
I was wondering Wednesday if there would be any suicides after the election. I was thinking someone might emulate the Buddhist priest in Vietnam and immolate himself.
Or already so out of your mind with depression that it’s just that one last thing to send you over the edge. Being clinically depressed does not require stupidity.
Can we agree that no-one in their right mind would kill themselves over an election?
Can we therefore conclude that the subject of the OP was not in his right mind?
Sometimes people are not in their right mind for reasons beyond their control. We should have some compassion for the family and friends of the dead, rather than brand the deceased a fucking moron, or an idiot.
If it was something that sent him over the edge, why didn’t he just do the deed in his home town? When you say “over the edge”, I take that to mean that he “snapped”. Someone who “snaps”, I would think, would just kill himself where ever he was, not plan out a suicide protest. I’ll give you schizophrenic at best.
Agreed. This thread (and the other one about this person) is totally insensitive. There’s no way that this election was the only bad thing to happen to this guy. Just like when someone “kills themselves over a breakup” there’s other issues going on and just because the guy didn’t have a known history of depression or other mental illness doesn’t mean that those issues weren’t there.
Amen to that. Instead, let me nominate this fucking moron:
“I’m absolutely sure it’s a protest,” said Mary Anne Mauney, Veal’s supervisor at the University of Georgia survey research lab. “I don’t know what made him commit suicide, but where he did it was symbolic.”
“I told his mother there are some people so sensitive and intelligent and passionate they don’t belong in the world the way it is today,” she said.
“And if this was something he had to do, it was heroic that he chose the World Trade Center.”
There is nothing “heroic” about killing yourself at the WTC. He left no note, so, apart from his friends saying he was upset about the election, we have no idea why he committed suicide, except that depression is probably a factor.
If that’s so, then it’s sad that he killed himself. It’s a tragedy that will affect his mother for the rest of her life. It will affect his siblings (if he has any) and his friends. They will spend the rest of their lives with this weighing on them. There’s nothing “heroic” in that.
Oh get the fuck off it already. I’m putting my money on drugs, and if so, he’s a moron. I’ll retract my previous statements if it is proven clinical depression was behind this.
Maybe it was a meaningful spot for him. It is for a lot of people, certainly.
If you haven’t been suicidal, you wouldn’t know what it feels like, what strange things seem to make complete sense. I’m not going to judge what was up with this man. It’s sad, and calling him a moron based on what little we know is a rush to judgement.
My point was that if he did take drugs, and the suicide was a result of it, then he’s a moron. I never said that anyone who takes drugs, addicted or not, is a moron. (ex, if you’ve never been depressed, then all the sudden go on a crack and LSD binge, and kill yourself? Moron.)
I don’t care if he was depressed, or on drugs, or just had such a warped sense of reality that he attached a grossly exagerrated personal significance to the election (fortunately, we haven’t had to deal with much of the latter here at the SDMB). A man lost his life in a senseless manner, and left behind family and friends–and if he didn’t leave behind family and friends, it’s all the more tragic. I’ll just pray that he’s found some kind of piece, and leave it to others to smear a life they never knew.
