Suicide Squad, directed by David Ayer, Sneak Peak

There was of course some leaked internet footage of the new suicide squad teaser, and David Ayer posted on twitter “can’t stop the pirates, let’s make it right” and has distributed an official version of the clip without the errors the pirated version probably has.

Here’sa link to the official teaser.

Why this has promise to me :

David Ayer. End of Watch. Fury. Both movies are fantastically well filmed, and contained numerous moments that subvert audience expectations.

This promises to be a lot grittier than some of the other comic book films, probably on the same level as the Dark Knight trilogy. (I guess “par” for DCverse films)

From the actual trailer : it looks good. Good music, some entertaining looking shots, and the whole concept of rooting for Team Badguys who get to haul automatic weapons into their engagements is pretty cool. And, they gotta shake batman, as shown in one scene late in the trailer.

It looks promising… I’m still baffled by what DC is doing with their movie-verse… is this working in the same world as Bat vs. Supes?

It’s no Secret Six, but it looks a lot better than Batman vs. Superman: The Snydering.

Man, I was hoping against hope that the Joker-Juggalo makeup was one of those errors. Dude looks less intimidating than Caser Romero.

Yes.

It has Affleck as Batman in it, so yes.

Also, in the trailer, they mention superman in reference to the fact that some members of the suicide squad and some of the criminals have what appear to be supernatural powers.

Any chance someone can give me a quick rundown as to what/who they are?

I know they’re all of Batman’s bad guys (it even says so in the trailer), but are they being good in this movie? Or bad? I’m guessing Suicide Squad is an actual comic or two, but what is it?

Anyone have the “complete idiots guide to the Suicide Squad”?

There have also been references to them in Arrow. The one that stands out most clearly is from within one of the ultra-max-lockups, we hear a little-girl voice, “Maybe I can help. I useta be a therapist, ya know” - or some such. That’d be Dr. Harley Quinn. So DC is doing at least a little bit of tie in to the TV series world.

From the trailer (and, actually, an animated batman movie that starred them that came out a year ago - it was really good), it’s obvious that

   1. They are still bad guys
   2. They are being forced somehow to fight for the good guys

Implanted bombs or something to force them to fight. The character Will Smith is playing is Deadshot, who’s positive quality is that he’s a professional about his assassinations.

There’s been more than references, two episodes of Arrow were based on the suicide squad.

It’s just not the most memorable series, as much as I like it.

In the comics, only 3 of them originated as Batman villains - Harley Quinn, Deadshot, and Killer Croc. Croc’s still mainly a bat-villain, Deadshot’s mostly been a Suicide Squad or Secret Six member for the past 20 years, and Harley…is an entity unto herself.

Captain Boomerang started as a Flash villain, but, like Deadshot, is mostly associated with the Suicide Squad now. Slipknot is a Firestorm villain, who quickly dropped to the Z-list.

El Diablo is traditionally a hero. This one’s…not so much.

I think there’ve been 3 or 4 Suicide Squad comics, so far (the current one is called New Suicide Squad).

The basic premise of the Suicide Squad is that Task Force X (a government group, led by Amanda Waller, the woman talking to the army guy (probably Rick Flagg) in the trailer) will recruit villains for the sort of missions they don’t want to be connected with - the villains give them deniability as Waller says in the trailer. Depending on which incarnation of the team, either they’re offered a clearing of their record, or they’re pressganged into it. Either way, they’re outfitted with an explosive device to keep them from going off-script - it’s rare for a Squad mission to be completed without at least one recruit getting his head blown off.

The makeup of the squad is ever changing as the villains die (either during the course of the mission, or by crossing Waller…or in at least one case, by pissing off another member of the team), or finish their tenure and walk away, but there’s a few regulars - Harley (in both of the recent incarnations), Deadshot, and Boomerang (both of them in almost every version of the team). The deeper your knowledge of DC villains needs to be to recognize a character in the Squad, the less likely they are to survive.

Very basic information on the characters used (their comic incarnations as I have no idea on the movie versions) -

Harley used to be Joker’s abused girlfriend. She’s a trained - and quite good - psychologist, but also quite out of her mind, herself…fun loving, but with a rather disturbing definition of fun. No longer on friendly terms with ‘Mistah J’.

Deadshot is an expert sniper with a death wish. One of the few things that keeps him going is his daughter. One of Waller’s go-to guys when she forms a new Squad.

Killer Croc…is complicated, so let’s stick to ‘big, strong, tough, and ugly’. May be dumb, or may be on the bright side of average. He’s all over the place on that note.

Captain Boomerang is a drunken, womanizing Australian with a bad attitude and a penchant for killing people with boomerangs. (What a shocker, eh?)

Slipknot…strangles people…like I said…pretty Z-list.

El Diablo is…probably a gangbanger recruited into the Squad after getting arrested for (attempted) murder. He may also be a former gang-banger possessed by a vengeful spirit with pyrokinetic powers. Depends which version of Chato they’re basing him more closely on.

It’s The Dirty Dozen with supervillains.

Awesome!

That was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!

Also…Harley is no longer cool with Joker? I thought part of her schtick was that she was obsessively in love with him like, all the time. Is this a comics canon thing?

More or less, yeah, though I haven’t seen all the recent Batman cartoons, so it’s possible she’s unconnected to him in at least one of them.

There’ve been a couple stories about her trying to give him up…but most of them have her going back at the end. They finally had one that took…I think it came with the relaunch, but it may have been a little earlier. She’s actually attempting to date, now, and otherwise have a vaguely normal life…though only very vaguely. (She owns a wax museum, and lives above it…the building is also home to a sideshow. She has a half-burnt stuffed beaver which she talks to.)

Well, of course, that could be the ‘conflict’ - the Suicide Squad is doing what they do and then Joker shows up and Harley turns on the team and they’ll have to get back from that.

Agree wholeheartedly. This makes me want to watch Suicide Squad. Batman v Superman makes me want to wait for it to appear on TV with commercial breaks.

This is movie universe, not TV universe (where Amanda Waller is typical CW casting - young and thin). And that was Katana I saw, wasn’t it? I know that the movie universe can make up whatever story it wants, but wasn’t she a good gal?

If anyone would like to get a sense of the Suicide Squad without reading the comics, there is a recent Animated Movie called Batman Assault on Arkham that is really a Suicide Squad movie in disguise.
