I would like to wear a suit to an office happy-hour function and I want to “dress it down” just a bit- (ala one of the queer eye episodes I saw recently)
I want to wear it with a pull-over style T-shirt. (assume the colors coordinate.)
I tried it on, and it looks good to me, however the soon-to-be Ex thought it was “too Miami Vice”.
would an outfit of this nature be horribly gauche, or is it acceptable?
Could you wear the suit with a polo-type shirt, a typical pullover with a collar and two or three buttons on top? I see that look all the time, including on Queer Eye. The suit with a T-shirt might work if they’re all dark colors. Avoid pastels and certainly don’t wear a white T-shirt that comes in a 3-pack from Fruit of the Loom.
You know, when I first read the OP I pictured him putting a T-shirt OVER the suit, and I was wondering to myself how the heck anyone would want to look THAT stupid!!
But now I get it… Sorry, not enough coffee I guess.
As for my opinion; I haven’t worn anything remotely like that in many years, but on the other hand I can’t say I’m at the forefront of the fashion train either, so I don’t know everything about what goes for stylish these days.
I have seen this look pulled off well, but these pictures are not good examples to follow. Especially the 4th one, but I am hoping your jacket does not look like that to start with. The pullover shirt is the least of his problems.
#3 is kind of cheating, unless you plan to sling your jacket jauntily like that all night.
Yes, definitely guilty. Maybe if the shirt had been a bit darker, or less flecky, or on someone less dorky. As it stands, however, just foul. Not nearly so foul as pictures 2 and 4, but foul nonetheless.
The third one’s not much better, IMO. That particular shirt just doesn’t work. I think it’s the way the collar stands out, or maybe the colored band around the collar. Anyway, don’t do that, either.
It can be done, but you have to be very careful. The pullover must fit very well - I mean closely and erring on the side of tight, so that it doesn’t bunch up under the suit. It must not only be of a compatible color, but fabric texture, too: either very similar, or highly contrasting, but nowhere in between.
[small]Never, ever take style cues from International Male, the dreckiest of drecky catalogs.[/small][SIZE=1]
I was going to pop in and say that, having seen you, I think you could pull it off. But then someone busts out the International Male links, and I just may have to question my answer. :o
Warning: the shirt shown in the above-linked pic is, in fact, hideous and not what I wear. But it gets the idea across of what a “camp shirt” might be.
