Summer Olympics 2021 ongoing discussion

[Moderating]

Is swimming a 2021 Summer Olympics event? Yes? Then it’s not a sidetrack.

And since I keep on getting reports on this thread for “hijacks” and “sidetracks”, let me make it clear: This thread is about the Olympics. Discussion of any Olympic event is on-topic. It remains on-topic even if other people want to discuss it for longer than you do. Stop reporting “hijacks” that aren’t.

Each race is around 30 minutes. I’m not sure of the distance. They run 12 races with a cumulative score based on their finishing place in each. I think they’ve completed 6 so far, so plenty of time to watch some more.

Yes - they changed a few years ago. Now they use “10-point must” scoring, without having to count the punches or worry about hitting with the front part of the glove. Also, headgear is banned in men’s boxing as of 2013 - and I think this was the rule up through 1980 as well.

Nitpick: Your cite was based on number of gold medals, not medals in general. The number of events with 4+ medals for one competitor is likely higher than this.

Yes, please! I have to say that doubles badminton is much more exciting than doubles tennis.

I’m loving the BMX races. I like how they do the heats. Three runs, sum of placing instead time determines advancement. I’d like to see that in other races.

Bzzzz wrong.
Which can be determined by clicking the URL and reading the cite.
The Wiki cite is titled, “multiple gold medallist’s” which it is but the table lists all medals, and the calculation is based on total medals won.

Now, yes there would be athletes who have won multiple “minor” medals at the same Olympiad without winning a gold. My money the proportion of those is much the same between disciplines. ie mostly swimmers and gymnasts.
Will check out my Google fu and post the results based on every Olympic medal won if you like.

Is Simone Biles done or can she still try for individual event medals?

She has not yet withdrawn from the individual events next week, and she qualified to compete for all four of them.

I believe she has completely withdrawn. NBC showed a practice Simone released today. She was on the parallel bars and just fell when she tried her dismount. She is not ready.

Oooh! The steeplechase! I don’t know why I enjoy watching it but I do.

I’m watching Women’s BMX. There was a crash, and the announcer said, “It’s like full-on NASCAR on two wheels!” Couldn’t be more wrong on more levels.

This has now become the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.

(Field) Hockey
Both Australian Mens & Womens team win their first four pool games for the first time in Olympic history. Both look odds on to progress.

(Field) hockey is similar to soccer/football in there being distinct styles.
In soccer there is the European vs South American style.
In hockey it is is (broadly) Europe vs Asia.

The Asian teams typically play 5-3-2 with the focus being faster, more direct and trying to score field goals while Europe play something akin to soccer formations eg 4-4-2 or 2-4-4 more controlled, slower trying to force and convert penalty corners.

Hockey, like soccer, is at it’s most interesting when the two styles meet. As it turns out the draw for both men and women put almost all the European teams in one pool and all the Asian teams in the other.

So the pool leaders and most likely to progress to semis for the womens are Germany+Netherland and Australia+Argentina while the mens are Australia+India and Belgium+Netherlands/Great Britain

There is nothing in my argument that is arbitrary that I can see. Certainly nothing that you’ve pointed out.

I think you just don’t agree with my opinion on the pointlessness of exactly the same course being covered in multiple, mandated, sub-optimal ways.

That’s fine, I’m not seeking to persuade you. You like what you like.

and then…

Which was my actual point.
You’ll be astonished to note that I did actually open your cite to realize this and point it out.

Matilda GK nice stop on a British PK

Australia scores…fantastic goal that even the best GK in the world couldnt stop.

Matilda’s regroup from saving PK and now lead after a shot with wicked deflection
