Summer Olympics 2021 ongoing discussion

Yes it was definitely not the most exciting game to watch. The penalty call was I think correct, but I kind of hate that the rule gives such an out-of-proportion punishment for such a foul. It does echo a bit the penalty that the US used to level the 2012 game.

It was an interesting penalty in that during the run of play, I didn’t think anything of it at all, barely seemed like contact, but with the replay you could clearly see the foul. I mean, if it’s the right call it’s the right call, so it shouldn’t matter, but it definitely felt weird for it to play out like that… particularly so clearly against the run of play.

I just skimmed through Australia 0 Sweden 1, and the goal was an awkward rebound off a mishandle from the keeper. Overall, just not a great tournament for showing off women’s football.

Another maddening aspect is the non stop focus on Megan Rapinoe who isn’t the captain, is a reserve, and has played awful.

Yes, I know she’s good for clicks as people either love her or hate her, but it’s been ridiculous.

Just seeing the clip now. First thought was it was a foul on Canada and the US got robbed. Watching more and more replays and I think it was probably correct. Canada initiates contact, but probably not enough for it to be a foul? I think you can argue that since there’s an argument to be made there, then VAR shouldn’t have overturned the call on the field, but I don’t think this was a terrible decision.

The bigsoccer referee board is basically split. Sucks to go out on a PK that’s worthy of debate, but thems the breaks.

I was watching it live early this morning. I originally thought the call was correct…foul on Canada, or at least a goal kick for the US.

But the Canadian woman definitely got to the ball first; I think her speed surprised the American defender. As I was watching the replay, I thought it would be ruled a PK, which is, of course, what happened.

I don’t think that should have been a PK, if anything, it was the Canadian who committed the foul.

But the U.S. team needed to go down, so it works.

IMO, the Canadian got to the ball first. Then the American kicked the leg of the Canadian without contacting the ball. It was a foul on the American.

400m hurdles semis in a frickin monsoon downpour

400m hurdles men final, beats world record, gets silver
That hurts but way to make someone feel crap interviewer people. At least Warholm the winner had some class .

Watching diving and a Mexican divers first name is Rommel. Mothers…dont let your sons grow up to be Nazis.

Sifan Hassan is a beast. She’s running in the 1500, 5000, and 10,000.

This is what happened in her 1500 heat and yet she won the heat anyway (pertinent part starts at 3:00).
Oh, and then a few hours later she won the 5000.

PHI Nesthy Petecio gets silver after losing to JPN Sena Irie in women’s featherweight boxing. We’ve still got a couple more boxers in the running, assured at least of a bronze. Pole vaulter EJ Obiena is coming up this evening.

Brazil v Mexico scoreless in the 33 minute although Brazil has dominated. A good match thus far.
Feel bad for Everton fans. Richarlison has played WC qualifiers, the Copa America and now the Olympics. And the EPL season starts in 11 days. How can he possibly be ready?

The way she ran that last 100 meters or so in the 5,000! Where did she find the energy?

It’s the Oprah Olympics. “You break the world record! And you break the world record!”

Women’s 800m final.

That 400mH world record was insane. The earlier record was 46.70 also by Warholm and this was 45.94, that is around a 1.6% reduction. I wonder if it is one of the biggest WR reductions in athletics history. And 46.70 itself was a major achievement, breaking a record that had stood since 1992. I wonder how long this one stands.

The women’s marathon record was broken in 2019. The old record was 2:17:01 and the new record is 2:14:04. I converted to seconds and did the math (I hope correctly) and that is a 2.1% drop.

Back in 1952 the men’s marathon WR went from 2:25:39 to 2:20:42, a drop of 3.3%.

Watching the replay of the semi-finals right now. This event is insane! And it looks like they’re riding little kid bikes, it’s hilarious. I know, they’re like that for reasons, but still. Funny!

And yeah, some of those crashes look pretty brutal.

Yeah, the BMX racing doesn’t really interest me. It seems it’s all about getting the quickest start, and most of the energy comes from the initial hill. I’ve rarely seen anybody ride past the leader.
