Summer Olympics 2021 ongoing discussion

I am streaming(I used Sling to gain access) all the Olympics using the NBC Olympics app on my Roku and the web site on my chromebook.

Will these replays stay up after the Olympics closing ceremony? Like, can I continue watching for a couple weeks(month???) after?

Nah, I think it’s the right call when you consider the fact that most of the Japanese population isn’t vaccinated. Having large crowds would be a disastrous idea.

I vaguely remember Rio being available for 30 days after the event date, but I could be misremembering or things could have changed. I’ve tried to Google it to no avail

As long as I can remember, the opening ceremonies have featured musical performances, dance, something of the country’s history and so forth. For example, I remember the 1984 Games in Los Angeles featured Rhapsody in Blue performed on 84 grand pianos.

Yeah, I remember that. Also the dancing tribute to the British National Health.

I think I was just grumpy because of where it came in the program, i.e., after what felt like way too many hours of stuff.

This will probably get me shunned, but I honestly wish they’d do the entire marching in of the athletes on fast forward. Yeah, they’re the whole point of the event, but it must have taken three hours just for them to all to walk into the stadium.

Huh, I always tune in just to see the parade of nations! The athletes look so happy.

The male announcer on NBC was terrible. You could tell the female announcer was annoyed.

And that didn’t even look like all of the athletes. I think some held back because they were competing the next day or just to lessen risk of spreading infection.

And yes, the parade of nations takes a long time. But remember that for many of these kids, that is their moment in the sun. Most aren’t going to win any medals (there are entire countries where no one has ever won a medal), and this is the culmination of a lifetime spent perfecting their sport. I regretted that everyone was masked because I loved seeing the smiles on everyone’s faces. They’re all so excited and then they mingle with kids from other countries on the field. (My pet peeve is that in recent years so many are holding camera phones, rather than just enjoying the experience.)

Regarding the thing where the French and the Americans brought up the rear (followed only by the host country), I think I do remember that, except usually only the host of the subsequent games is known. This time, they determined in advance the next two hosts. I think usually the decision is made less than eight years in advance.

Closely-competed handball match between Sweden and Bahrain so far. (I’m watching a replay).

But…but…they showed the “skipped” countries on split-screen! That’s actually an improvement - in 1996, NBC skipped Hungary’s entry entirely so it could interview Charles Barkley waiting to enter the stadium along with the rest of the USA athletes.

I agree that skipping the oaths is inexcusable. Let’s see if NBC skips live coverage of the medal ceremonies for the men’s and women’s marathons, which are both supposed to be part of the closing ceremonies. It’s bad enough when the women’s basketball ceremony is changed to present the gold medal last so NBC can show just the Americans being introduced to receive their medals and then the anthem is played. There was a time - I want to say 1996 - when the gold medalists were given their medals first, as with all other events, but after the Americans were introduced, “We’ll be back with the national anthem after these commercials.”

When they cut to a commercial during the parade, when the show came back they’d mention, and show a short clip, of the countries that came in during the break. I didn’t see them do that for Johnson’s bit. I also thought it was a bit ridiculous to have a professional wrestler doing that intro; interrupt an event that’s about competition and sportsmanship with a guy who used to pretend to beat up people he hated.

They only mentioned the skipped countries when there was no split screen. This only happened when they cut away for local commercials. They never mentioned, for example, eSwatini or North Macedonia after they entered, because they were both shown entering on split screen. A few countries near the end, including New Zealand, got the split screen treatment so NBC could air swimmer Lilly King either on the bus to the stadium or waiting to enter.

Brandon McNulty was in medal position late in the bicycle road race, but got dropped.(ended up in 6th)
Carapaz wins the Gold by quite a bit, Pogacar has to settle for a very close Bronze (I’m guessing he is OK with it) van Aert gets the Silver.

OK, what sport is this? It seems to be a version of basketball. Right now on my tv the US women are taking om Mongolia in a 3 on 3 short court. It’s not even a half court. There’s only one basket, and they take turns at it playground style. The court is just slightly larger than the key area, it extends just beyond the 3-point line. It isn’t scored like basketball, either. What the heck is this?

I’m watching now too. Pretty interesting. If you listen to the announcers they explain what it is.

I downloaded the Olympics app so I can easily access pages on sports, countries and athletes. Here’s the page on 3x3 Basketball, too much info to paste.

Huh. The rules didn’t mention if a defensive rebounder (if shot hit the rim) must take the ball outside the arc (or pass it to a teammate there) before attempting a shot, as in typical street half-court. Doesn’t sound like they need to — so I assume defending-team put-backs are common.

Actually, you DO have to “take it out” after a defensive rebound (see video at 1:50) — and after a made shot as well! (Can either team “rebound” a made shot? Doesn’t look like it. Only the team that didn’t score can do that, it seems.)

The USA announcers at the surfing are being drowned out by surf and wind noise. Apparently no one planned adequately for the conditions and their microphones just pick up everything around them. It’s like listening to people at a loud beach.

I don’t know how many ways there are to pop a skateboard up in the air and then slide down something; and after about five, I don’t care.

Watching Women’s Waterpolo. USA v Japan. A rout so complete, it’s almost embarrasing.

Score looks like a football game. 23-4 and it ain’t over yet!
