I actually like when they say “Here’s the remote feed of Peppermint Patty’s friends and family back in Minnesota,” and they wave little flags and go “Yayyyyyyyy!” Makes me think of Holy Grail. “They had to eat Robin’s minstrels. And there was much rejoicing.” ::hoorayyyyyyyyyy::
Yikes!! A German coach gets kicked out of the Olympics for punching a horse during modern pentathlon
Clearly he was imitating Alex Karras. Further proof how excessive violence in the media leads to violence irl.
Belgian marathoner Mieke Gorissen came in 28th in the women’s race and she was so happy she broke down crying. This was only the third marathon ever for the 38 year old math teacher.
I’m not sure what is left, but I do want to see Richard Torrez Jr fight for the gold medal.
What else is left to see? Gold medal volleyball?
Women’s basketball?
The gold medal game for women’s basketball starts at 9:30 Central time tonight. USA vs Japan.
The gold medal game for women’s volleyball starts at 11:30 Central time tonight. USA vs Brazil.
There are also two women’s handball games, and four men’s water polo games. There are four boxing matches, the team rhythmic gymnastics competition, and several bicycle races.
And I think that’s it for the 2021 Olympics.
Isn’t the men’s marathon tonight?
The men’s marathon is already finished.
Yep, finished about an hour ago.
Looks like the US women will win the gold medal for basketball and not make it close like in the men’s game. The men’s game gave me a heart attack, this one is a 20 point game with about 90 seconds to go right now.
Dominating performance by the US women in hoops. An easy 15 point win which wasn’t that close. It was basically over halfway through the third quarter. Credit Japan for having a great game plan and staying within shouting distance throughout the game.
If the US women win the volleyball gold medal, we have tied China in gold medal totals, unless China has won something tonight.
I believe the US has 37 now and they have 38.
I haven’t watched much of these Olympics but this game was one of the few times I saw a decent crowd in the audience, just from all of the volunteers there to cheer on the Japanese team. The empty stadiums really made for a weird experience.
And by the way, I’m watching this on my Xfinity cable box, owned by Comcast, which owns NBC Universal and the Peacock streaming service. Ideally, everything would be integrated, so one could chose what to watch from a central menu. But I don’t see that they’ve done that. Anyone else watching on Comcast cable and more impressed with the viewing experience?
It’s interesting that the closing ceremonies are on 8-8, the Beijing Olympics had their opening ceremonies on 8-8-08
And the US women absolutely thump Brazil in volleyball for their first ever team gold. A little surprising how dominant the US was in both the semis and final match… they were playing great and, frankly, both opponents were not. Which is how sports are sometimes. Certainly heartwarming to see the outpouring of emotion after the match.
As for the overall medal count, apparently the US won a surprise gold in one of the cycling sprint events, and ends up sneaking past China for gold medals. U S A! U S A!
Women’s basketball and volleyball finals were really cool. A great way to end my Saturday!
I’ve never cared very much for the Olympics or sports in general, but the wife is a volleyball fan, so we watched the women’s USA versus Brazil tonight. Pretty good, I thought. This is the first Olympics for the the wife as a US citizen, so she enjoyed rooting her team on. (If they’d been held on schedule last year, the wife would not have been a citizen yet.) I was pleasantly surprised at the win, considering the conventional wisdom we’d heard today that pretty much had Brazil winning out of hand, no need even to play the match. Congrats, team.
Now, I don’t know how the US or other Western countries do it, but for Thailand, athletes get paid a hefty reward for Olympic wins. A graduated scale of course, with gold medals earning the most. I’ve read complaints in the Thai newspapers that the rewards seem to be down this year, due no doubt to the bad Covid economy. I’ve never heard of Western countries paying their athletes bonuses for their wins, but then I’ve not paid that much attention.
On the one hand I will miss being able to watch some sport 24/7; on the other hand I will appreciate getting a normal nights sleep. And footie is back next weekend.
No coincidence there - 8 is a lucky number in both Japan and China.
