Sunday! Sunday! Amphetamine Speedway!

Okay, we’ve all heard it at some point.

But lost in the mists of time – what was it from originally?

(Flo and Eddie? It has a sort of Volman and Kaylan sound to it, doesn’t it?)

And where can I find it today?

Thanks!

It’s often attributed to Flo and Eddie, but since none of their tracks has a title by that name, you’d have to do a fairly extensive search to find it.

However, I should point out that every two-bit d.j. who wanted to be a comedian probably did a “Sunday Sunday” take off at one time or another.

Sunday! Sunday! Sunday! At Detroit Dragway!

I had this exact bit running through my head earlier today. In the daydream, the guy shouting “Sunday! Sunday!” was a clearly insane person in a straitjacket, constantly shouting “Sunday!”, with a keeper doing various things to try to stop him from shouting “Sunday!”…dousing him with buckets of water, etc. We had the same ad when I was a teen in the 70s for “I-70 International Raceway!”

The Sunday, Sunday, Sunday bit goes back at least to 1965.

See this thread:

Mebbe so, but I bet what you originally heard on the boob tube was this:

That’s the original – and it’s great – but what I want is the parody of Jan Gabriel.

No, I think it was this one (NSFW).

I’d guess that you’re thinking here of the “Sunday! Funny cars! Big John Masmanian!” ad lib during the passage-of-time bit in “Billy the Mountain.”

Was that the original? I remember almost the exact same ad, only for Thompson Drag Raceway (opened in 1958) here in Ohio, here’s a recording from 1965. “Big Daddy” Don Garlitz and “TV Tommy” Ivo raced there, among others.

Two characters do their own version of a “Sunday! Sunday!” ad in the film, “The Return of the Secaucus Seven.”

TubaDiva,
I know the cut you’re talking about.

** Sunday! ! ! Sunday! ! !**
See Jesus Christ and his twelve apostles in their blown fuel funny car!!!

Sundaaaayyyyyyy!

See Ralph Nader in his 5000 horsepower lunatic Corvair! ! !

***SUNDAAAYYYY ! ! ***

I used to hear it on KSAN in the Bay Area all the time. And being a drag racer I thought it was fantastic, because all the 64 Funny Car ads ran all the time on the AM stations. Thanks for the Flo & Eddie tip. I’m gonna do some serious searchin". If I find it I’ll post the results.

Jim

Well, like the fight against Ignorance, it’s taking longer than I thought … but I have my answer!

Hey, it was less than 9 years! That’s gotta be worth something, right?

Grats on finding that! It is awesome!
