Just got some new RayBans in my trip to the States last month. My girlfriend didn’t like my old ones (big boxy looking ones) and convinced me to get some better looking ones.
I understand that, what I was replying to was your statement
which makes it sound like m frames don’t come with hinges at all, when in fact on the m frame pros don’t have hinges.
I’m not sure what make are mine, even.
For the longest time I wore graduated lenses, with the kind of glasses that get darker when there’s more light. The brand was Indocromic.
Now that I got Lasik, I use real sunglasses. Here in the EU there is a regulation about sunglasses, where they must use a code to indicate how much protection they give. Not every brand follows it, though. I always buy mine in a store I trust (that is, not necessarily in an optometrist’s, but not off a truck’s back either); I check to see whether all the glasses they carry have this marks and choose one that looks good on me and has at least level 3 protection - since I only wear them when the sun is really hitting hard, not for “coolness sake”, I want them to give real protection.
For a couple years 16 years ago, I bought clip ons when I was vacationing in Florida. I bought them each year caue I promptly lost them when I got home. I don’t wear sunglasses often, obviously. I have a pair of prescription that I bought 7 or so years ago (when we had a convertible) that I wear the most, although they seem to give me a headache. And I just came across those again after more than a year. I bought a new pair past year, but they don’t fit well and the opticians can’t seem to get them to fit well. So I don’t wear those at all.
And I am astounded that you folks put such effort into what sunglasses you wear. I suppose I’m just lazy.
I wear a 5 dollar pair of wal-mart sunglasses. I like them because they match my hair. (I hijacked my mom’s sunglasses, with her blessing, but my brother broke them before I had the chance to wear them.)
I use Ray-Ban Daddy-Os. They’re kind of dorky, but they take prescription lenses and they provide excellent wind protection for when I’m motor- or bi-cycling.
While I had a particular roommate I picked up a love of sunglasses. I started wearing contacts specifically so that I could wear sunglasses.
I had a pair of Oakley Zeros for quite a while, but they were stolen from me. I was devestated and would only wear drugstore glasses for a while.
I have that a pair of these for at least two years now. I like the blue ones in teh link, but I have a pair with fire lenses and an orange O on the temple. They don’t seem to sell that one anymore. I love them. The lense shape is perfect for my face and they cut glare to nil.
The only problem with them is that they have metal frames and those have a tendancy to get hot when you are out in the sun for a long time. I want a pair of Half-jackets so that I can change out the lenses and such to suit different activities.
I wear a pair of big aviator-style Elvis sunglasses, with the shiny silver chrome frames and the circular holes down the arms. I bought them at Graceland in Memphis, and I love them. Most other people do too–I’m always getting positive comments on them, especially because I’m usually wearing a shirt and tie when I’m out. Apparently a lot of celebrities wear the Elvis shades now, including Johnny Knoxville and Li’l Jon, two people I’ve been accused to trying to look like. The funniest exchange was at the deli at Publix:
Lou: I’ll have a half-pound of roast turkey, please.
Girl: Sure. Cool glasses! They’re like that guy! Elton John!
Lou: Actually they’re supposed to look like Elvis. I got them at Graceland.
Girl: Oh, I’ve always wanted to go to Graceland. Scandinavia is so beautiful!
About 12 years ago I decided there wasn’t much point in buying cheap sunglasses and constantly replacing them when I lost or broke them, so I bought a pair of Serengeti Drivers (don’t know the exact model, but a very similar frame shape to the classic USAF pilot’s sunglasses) and I still wear them. I don’t really know how they look on me, but they’re fantastic to look through. They’re great in different light conditions, and colors come through extremely well. UV protection and no gimmicks like polarization.
A friend bought a pair of these in Biloxi two years ago and won’t let me borrow them (he knows he’ll never get them back). I need to point out that the sideburns are attached to the frames, not the model’s face. I looked for a pair when I was in Vegas but no luck, looks like I’m going to have to drive to Biloxi now. Coolest. Sunglasses. Ever.
I know I could order a pair off the internet, but then I’d have to find another reason for a road trip.
I’ve got 4 pair that I use regularly.
I just picked up a new pair this summer, a really cute style by Kate Spade. I think they may become my everyday sunglasses this summer. And they’re prescription, which is a nice bonus.
I have 2 more pair, a big pair of brown tortoise shell by Guess? that I like to wear when I’d prefer to hide behind big, dark glasses, and another smaller cat-eye type of black glasses by Fossil that I just keep around my PC area for running outside in a hurry, like across the street to the market, etc.
And a pair of cycling glasses that my husband gave me to wear when riding.
Well, I am on the search now for the Perfect Pair. What I want is basically going to be impossible to find - either extra large '50s round style (Sort of like this only much bigger), Lolitas , or cat eyes . Preferably with mirrorshades and a wicked color frame for dirt cheap
Right now I have a twelve-dollar pair of sunglasses and I don’t remember where I bought them. The frames are tortoise colors, but in a faint vertical stripe pattern. They’re fairly large and have a substantial feel to them. I love them.
These, the Ray-Ban RB 2030 Predator 8 Wrap. I had no idea they were called that until I looked it up on the net just now, I just liked them because I thought they looked like the ones Clint Eastwood wore in Dirty Harry and Magnum Force. Of course, I don’t have that tortoise frame/brown lens combination shown, mine is the matte black frame with grey lenses (W2175).
I’d love to get another pair of sunglasses, with big black plastic frames, either square or rectangular. Essentially I want indie-rocker hipster nerd glasses, and I don’t want to spend more than $20. I had a pair like this back in college, but broke them while they were in my front pocket and I leaned over a pool table to take a shot. Where would I look for such a thing, the fearsome Hot Topic?
Actually, I pick up sunglasses in the local casinos - and I do mean literally pick them up.
Found a pair of Gucci sunglasses left behind at a video slot machine. Sent them to a woman friend in NYC…they retail for over $200 and she was happy to get them.
And just three weeks ago, some guy must have dropped his cool wrap-arounds in the parking lot. I would never have even tried them on in a store, but once I tried them, I fell in love with them. No idea if they originally cost $5 or $500…I like 'em and they’re mine until I lose them to the next lucky finder.
But I do have several pairs of aviator style sunglasses at home that I still like to wear on occasion. Glad to hear they haven’t gone out of style.
I wear $1 sunglasses from the dollar store.
Mostly when I’m driving, so who cares if I look dorky.
No big deal if they get lost or broken.
Same here. slinks out of thread…
I started out wearing Ray Ban Aviators, then fell in love with SunCloud’s rose-tinted lenses. SunClouds were discontinued, and the only brand I could find that had the rose lenses was MAUI JIM. They’re outrageously expensive, BUT–they have an extremely generous repair/replacement policy. So far, I’ve bought only one pair, but have had them replaced TWICE for only shipping charges.
The sunglasses I currently wear, and have for the past four years are Ray Ban Predators in matte blue with dark smoke gray lenses.
I love my Ray Bans and can’t stand to wear anything else. Thay are perfect for me because they are available with really dark lenses for being outside a lot in bright sun and they are durable. I drop them all the time… on concrete, asphalt, rock outcrops etc… not one scratch on the lenses (and they always land lens down).
The pair I had before these I had for 5+ years, I actually stepped on them twice and only the frame needed a bit of readjustment. They were abused, and when I purchased my current ones, the lenses on the old ones weren’t even scratched. (I wanted a wrap style lens to protect my eyes better).
I wear them every day and they still look practically brand new, except for a few scratches in the paint along the top of the frame due to the abuse they get.
note of interest: Ray Bans were the original sunglasses developed to protect pilots eyes from harsh UV rays while flying, and my 60 year old father in law wore them for more than 30 years was told by his optomitrist that he had the retinas of a 20 year old. FIL who was a fighter pilot and a commercial airline pilot, was issued RayBans by the Air Force when he joined in the mid 60’s.
