The Sphinx’s dream sequence in the first panel of this has been confusing me for a while. What is it a reference to? I’m confused.
Well, it’s Gulliver on the island of Lilliput, obviously, but what the significance is to the rest of the comic (if there is any), I couldn’t tell you.
Note how she’s pouring ketchup on him and anxiously holding dining utensils. Beyond being a reference to Gulliver’s Travels, it’s just a way to illustrate her obsessive appetite for human flesh.
But what do the Sphinx clones have to do with anything?
If you’re talking about the Lilliputian Sphynxes in the dream, they’re just representations of … the Lilliputians from the cited Gulliver’s Travels.
Dream sequences are often somewhat surreal.
