To tell you the truth I’m a bit stunned that there have been no replies to this thread so I will give it one bump because the Super Bowl is tomorrow.
What, nobody that reads this board has bought a box in a Super Bowl (SB) pool? I thought that having a SB box was a 47 year old tradition among Americans. You didn’t have to be a football fan because knowledge of football has nothing to do with the chances of winning. Everyplace I ever worked had a SB pool. I’ve seen people that don’t know the difference between a foot and a ball win a lot of money because they threw in a few dollars.
OTOH, more likely, I’m on everyone’s “ignore” list. That’s fine.
Nothing wrong with that but with the pools I’ve been involved in we pulled the numbers as soon at the boxes are filled. That give everyone a chance to go to church and light votive candles.
I saw a Darren Rovell (CNBC) tweet on some variants of the Super Board Bowl pool.
Have the option where players can sell and/or trade their squares.
10% of the jackpot goes to each of the neighbors (NSEW), Balance goes goes to the winner. If you get a square on the edge, you have less chance to share the jackpot but would get a better jackpot if you happen to win.
Personally, I like this one best myself. Instead of taking the last digit, sum the digits. 27 = 9. (if the digits adds to 10 or more (like 38) then take the last digit. I think it equalizes the probability of each square. Squares ending with 2,5,9 are not likely winners*. Squares with 0,3,4,7 are more likely.
*disclaimer, there was a 32-29 superbowl score a few years back.
That being said I don’t understand the purpose of the contrived permutations.
Typically there are 100 boxes. There are 5 payouts, each quarter and the final score. Let’s forget the fact that typically the winner of the final quarter wins the final score but overtime is possible.
So, each box has a 20% chance of a payout. Does random x random x random = more random? It’s not as if anybody is picking a box knowing the numbers ahead of time. The payout is limited. You can contrive methods to move the payout from one box to another but what is the point? That doesn’t increase the payout. One box wins, another loses. OK, so spread out the winnings. Just make it so everybody gets their initial investment back. No thanks, no point in that.
I’ll stick with the standard. If I lose, I bet and lost but it was interesting. If I win, party time! It’s not as if I’m betting the grocery money.
This OP was to get input from those that are in play. Then we can watch the game and if anyone in the SDMB Game Room comes up a winner we can give them a high five. The idea was to pull for each other and have some fun.
First, I apologize for hijacking your thread, it was not my intention, I was just trying to generate some discussion.
Second There are not necessarily 5 payouts. I have seen boards with just a halftime and final score.
And boards with just a one jackpot.
I have also seen a $100/square board with a interesting catch. It is basically an admission (2 people) to a superbowl party at a private club. With a free beer (keg), appetizers and coupons for free drinks.
Each score gets there money back,
0-0 wins $100
if team 1 scores a TD w/ an extra point
6-0 wins $100
7-0 wins $100
and so on and so on.
The Private Club takes the cost of the party out of the kitty and what is left goes to the final score winner. I went to such a party for the Super Bowl XXXVIII 32-29 NE win over Carolina. I think there were 17 different scores. I remember that my square was 9-9 was so happy to get my $100 back.
