Super Mario movie, in theatres holiday 2022 [upd: April 7, 2023]

I can’t see YouTube’s downvotes. I thought YouTube hid that stuff.

Not everyone is sold on Pratt, they just think the movie looks amazing. I dig it, too.

They really didn’t put much Chris Pratt in that trailer, did they? He’s got like one line in it.

The fan dubs of this movie are going to be amazing.

Well I really enjoy Princess Peach joining in on the action is there a reason she’s wearing some body-suit like thing which is non-canon as far as I know and not just fighting in her dress?

I know it’s impractical in real life but this is Mario and she’s still in her dress in Smash Bros, Mario Kart, and Mario Party. It’s pretty damn iconic to see Peach fight in her dress.

The bodysuit looks like the ones Peach, Daisy, and Rosalina wear in MarioKart when they ride motorcycles.

Oh okay makes sense, I think Motorcycles in Mario Kart are sacrilege so I never use them.

Also wasn’t there some weird lore things involving Mario’s backstory that Nintendo Japan is trying to make canon, such as they’re not actually Brothers (It’s just a team name) and now Mario actually isn’t romantically interested in Peach, they’re just good friends? Also Mario isn’t even Italian -American?

They are brothers as far as I know. Shigeru Miyamoto has said some weird things about Mario in the past, but I don’t think ANYTHING is cannon. I mean, ‘Yoshi’s Island’ indicates that they were brought in by a stork as babies to the Mushroom Kingdom. No mention of Brooklyn at all, which WAS cannon. He stated that Mario’s physical age was about 24–25 years old, and Nintendo Power stated that his birthday is October 11. As far as I’m concerned, Mario’s story is whatever suits the situation. It kind of why I’m not bent out of shape about Pratt playing Mario.

The clue is IN THE TITLE, people!

…I don’t see it.

I suppose Pratt just using his normal voice is a little better than a shitty fake Italian accent. Not criticising Charles Martinet’s work as Mario, of course; I just don’t think Pratt could’ve pulled something like that off.

But really, this is an argument against him, and for professional voice actors.

The Martinet Mario voice would get really grating over the course of a whole movie.

I see what you did there.

He did pretty good in the Lego Movie.

Of course, he was playing a generic everyman character that stands out by not standing out, so I guess that fits.

Mario is kind of a generic everyman character, too.

Charles Martinet IS amazing! For those who say the voice would get annoying the whole film, I don’t know about that. People play the game for hours at a time, every jump gives you a Mario audio que, so I’m not sure if it would be that bad if he had light dialog. If Martinet voiced Mario, then it’s be weird if he didn’t play Luigi, too.

With a big budget Movie being released, I could see why they’d want the “star power”. I really love the rest of the casting, and I’m definitely not a fan of Pratt, the guy… though I don’t think he’s a ‘bad person’. I think he was quite good in some of his roles. What I hate is his phony, supposed love he has for Mario. I highly doubt it was his “life long dream”.

I thought of anyone else who could fill those shoes, and I honestly can’t think of many “better” choices.

My buddy thinks this movie has so much broad appeal that it might be “the highest grossing film of all time”. I have no doubt it has broad appeal and will do well, but I don’t see tit doing THAT well. It will probably be the first movie I went to the theaters for after Covid, but…

Any thoughts on how well it’s going to do? I’m sure it could break some records.

He is wrong. There are a lot of people who have played Nintendo games, but it’s fewer than most people think, especially amongst younger generations, and that’s about as far as its broad appeal goes. I think it will do reasonably well compared against other animated movies of the year, but that’s about it.

I don’t know. You might be right that fewer people are into Nintendo than most realize. A lot of this depends on if it’s an entertaining movie or not. I love that they added Mario Kart, but does it organically fit into the story? I don’t know. I’m SURE it’ll do better than Sonic did.

No, I don’t think it’ll be one of the highest grossing films ever.

Music’s interesting.

I recently watched a movie called Luck that had a sequence almost exactly the same as that clip.

Final Trailer:

They are projecting big numbers for the movie, from what I heard, which is no real surprise. I don’t hate Chris Pratt. I think he’s a good performer. Not always the smartest guy in the world, in my opinion. To be honest, I couldn’t name another big celebrity to fill the role in replacement. I’m starting to get use to it.

Charles Martinet seems like the coolest dude of all time, and I hope he portrays Mario in some fashion in the movie. I guess I just trust the directions this movie is taking so far. I doubt it would interest non Mario fans, but… who doesn’t dig Mario? I mean, my parents aren’t exactly fans, but I don’t know the last time they saw a movie at the theaters, anyway.

I’m sorry for gushing… but I was born in 1980. Ever since I was aware of Mario, I was hooked. ‘The Super Mario Super Show’, and the original ‘Super Mario Bros.’ Movie did not feel like authentic ‘Mario’ to me, nor did it do the character the justice he deserves. I DO appreciated the attempts. I think the live-action movie was fun in a campy way, just not ‘Mario’. This movie is a realization of the images I’ve had of a Mario movie since I was 5, or so.

Also love the ‘Super Maio Super Show’ music used in this Superbowl ad. Super Mario Bros. Plumbing Commercial - YouTube
