Super Strains of Staph in LA not being stopped.

Here’s a good article on a developing strain of staph infection that is not being combated by the LA public health institution. This strain has gotten a strong hold on an area that doesn’t have adequate health care, that is a source of resistant strains. The staph is affecting many service workers like cops and firefighters that have contact with the area. How much longer until the staph can’t be stopped and breaks out as a common infection in communities accross America? It’s not just a rare hospital ocuurance for the comprimised patient anymore.

My God.

Are the LA Health people crazy?

This is appalling.

It’s a deplorable response.

Hmmmm. Skid Row Staph? Sounds like a dramatic name for a reasonably normal MRSA variant to me, similar to the one that’s been causing havoc in UK hospitals.

And unfortunately, the response is perfectly predictable when actually doing something about it would cost the local health authorities and various employers tens of millions of dollars. When everyone involved has a strong incentive to try to shuffle the problem off on someone else, it will remain ignored until it reaches crisis point.

Which it will do fairly soon, when resistance to the last few potent antibiotics is reached, or when multi-drug resistance becomes widespread amongst the S. Aureus that 1 in 3 of the population carries.

Just wait till they start hanging out with the Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci and swapping genes. Then the party will really get started.
