My name is Borborygmi and I’m here to say
“The Weeknd” is misspelled in a major way
I do think that assuming a black artist with a slightly fun name is a rapper is, at the very least, problematic.
The strange division of all pop music into rap and non-rap music also raises my spidey senses a bit, tbh. I was discomforted when it was first said, but I kept my mouth shut until @Chingon kind of said what I was feeling.
I will btw, quote the OP:

I had heard of “The Weekend” previously from when he performed on SNL, but I had no recollection of him. I expected him to be a rapper.
He did not realize that the artist had a fun spelling of “Weekend” when he postulated that he was a rapper…

And the Beatles? Led Zeppelin? Really? Not good examples or relevant to this conversation since rap wasn’t (as far as I know) around then.
The claim that it was the oddly spelled word that signaled “rap artist” strains credulity.

Doesn’t strain my credulity whatsoever. However, ISiddiqui has now pointed out that the OP wasn’t aware of the spelling so now I don’t know what to say.
Boy - I must be some kind of crazy clueless, because someone going by the name “The Weeknd” does not impress me as more or less “fun” or weird than “The Weekend.” Nor would I imagine one or the other to be more likely to be any particular race/ethnicity/gender.
Modhat: Tweet!
No more about the Op and his admitted cluelessness. If you want to talk about the halftime show, please do. If you want to talk about Dinsdale, take it to somewhere in the pit.
To get things back on track, I’ll throw in that I am another terminally uncool middle-aged dude who’d never heard The Weeknd’s music before his SB show. My only complaint was that I didn’t hear it then, either.
I’ve heard all those songs on the radio. I thought the show relied more on pyrotechnics and Michael Jackson references, was pretty flat, and didn’t mind it as background spectacle while making lunch.
