Supergirl Season 5

Such a fun episode. Chyler Leigh got to exercise her dramatic acting. Plus we got to see adult Alex interact with teen Alex.

Kelly finally, finally, finally understands that something is wrong with the VR tech. Unfortunately, Miss Tessmacher! is back and implanted (by Lex?) into Obsidian North.

Kelly + William is such an unusual team up. Are the writers trying to convince us that William is a good guy, suitable for Kara? Because it’s not really working.

I can’t figure out if Andrea is supposed to be evil, incompetent, or a bizarre combination of both.

Maybe I blinked and missed it, but: remember the Asian Supergirl? Approved of the black costume? Likes her drinks cold? Rushed off to get help or something once she seemed to realize that Alex had forgotten that she’s in a VR simulation?

Shouldn’t there have been some payoff to that?

MELISSA BENOIST MAKES HER DIRECTORIAL DEBUT - Lex proceeds to lay an intricate plan to bring Lena closer to him, defeat Leviathan’s latest attack, and pit Supergirl and team against Leviathan. It is also revealed how Lex came into power after Crisis.

It was perhaps inevitable that the writers would try to recreate that magical moment from last season, when we learned that Lex was behind everything. And so we see the events of the past half-season recontextualized with Lex manipulating what happened. Unfortunately, the storytelling fell flat this time around. We already knew from the outset that Lex was in play and so we could surmise that he was controlling things behind the scenes, even if we weren’t aware of the details. Also, the plot was so convoluted that it was hard to recall which bad guy did what; the involuntary hiatus didn’t help matters.

I did like the oblique reference to what happened between Lex and Miss Tessmacher in the Superman movie. I am hoping that Lex’s poor treatment of Eve comes back to bite him in the ass.

I suspect it will. Lex doesn’t really understand Supergirl - he thinks she won’t be able to forgive Eve for killing Jeremiah (or thinks that Eve won’t think Kara can forgive) - but Supergirl is better than that (and Eve is smart enough to realize this). It would be great for Lex’s defeat to hinge on his misunderstanding of Kara’s goodness.

LENA DISCOVERS THE CONSEQUENCES OF PROJECT NON NOCERE - Supergirl and the team go head to head against Rama Khan (guest star Mitch Pileggi) and Leviathan. Meanwhile, Lena and Lex must join forces when Project Non Nocere fails, leaving the two siblings in serious danger.

This is the part of the season where the writers, having faffed about for ten episodes or more, suddenly realize that they have to start wrapping things up. It was doubly urgent this season due to cutting from 22 to 20 episodes to accommodate Melissa’s pregnancy. They were in a few days from completing what would have been the finale when production shut down due to the pandemic. I wonder how many plot lines, if any, will be resolved next week?

At least Lena finally came to her senses.

When Dreamer said to Brainy (in her dream) “Get out of my dream,” who else added “And into my car”? Just checking…

DAVID HAREWOOD DIRECTED THIS PENULTIMATE EPISODE - Supergirl realizes that in order to stop Lex and Leviathan she must work with the one person she never thought she’d trust again - Lena. Nia keeps dreaming about Brainy but struggles with what the dreams are trying to tell her. Meanwhile, Brainy realizes there is only one way to stop Lex.

A surprisingly good finale, for all that it was rushed. Leviathan defeated, maybe. Obsidian and Andrea neutralized (I still don’t know what Leviathan’s plan for the VR tech was). Lena and Kara on the road to reconciliation. Alex gets a new suit. Kara also gets a new suit, perfect for when Melissa goes on maternity leave. Brainy may or may not be dying. And, of course, Lex is still out there.

Biggest disappointment is that Eve was more or less a McGuffin and didn’t really have much of a hand in bringing down Leviathan, Obsidian, or Lex. She didn’t even manage to take down William. There’s always next season.
