Supergirl

About the spoiler…

I liked that they used the DCAU version of J’onn. At least it looked like they did. That was my favorite look for that character.

I imagine she didn’t tell anyone other than Winn and James that she actually broke it. She could tell her other coworkers that it was just a sprain or something.

Speaking of Winn, good on him for finally breaking the facade and calling Kara out over making eyes at someone else’s boyfriend. I realize that was at least half because he has the hots for Kara, but it needed to be said.

Wait until Legends of Tomorrow premieres with Kator Hol/Carter Hall, aka Hawkman.

Well, that answers that question, then.I thought it was a bit out of character for Cat to admit to Kara that she knew (or at first suspected) she was Supergirl. Cat strikes me as the type who’d hold her cards a little closer to the vest; knowledge is power, and all that. Not quite sure what to make of Astra. Says she could have saved Krypton and wants to save Earth, but is kinda thin on the details so far.

I think I’d rather have Cat not know Supergirl’s secret identity, there are too many people who know already. They need some good ole Silver Age-inspired hijinks. J’onn J’ones can pose as Kara and stand next to Supergirl. Pow, problem solved.

I like that she figured it out. She hadn’t noticed Kara before, but as Kara has been doing more at work and Cat has taken more notice and been more like a mentor to her, she couldn’t help but notice the similarities, and weird coincidences. It would be kinda weird if they continued to show Cat be this really smart, successful journalist, but not notice this obvious thing right under her nose. The show is still a bit cheesy, so I guess they could have had that and it just be one of the cheesy superhero conventions they follow, but I’m glad they didn’t.

For the episode, I was a bit underwhelmed by Astra. I do get annoyed when someone says “I’ve got a great plan and you need to trust me and join me in doing it” but won’t say what that plan is. Also I’m tired of the trope of the villain gets captured because they want to and it’s part of the plan and the heroes don’t realize it until it’s too late. After Astra had been such a formidable opponent before, and then somewhat easily beaten by Supergirl, I noticed that immediately and the characters should have noticed it much sooner.

Honestly, I was really expecting Cat to have figured it out quite a while ago. I really got the idea that she was just kind of playing along, letting Kara have her secret identity.

Many people have suggested that, and I kind of would have preferred it myself. But the scene we got certainly played as if Cat had just put it all together. Either way, I’m glad that they addressed it. Cat has been portrayed as too savvy a character not to notice something like that. The “she doesn’t look at the little people” thing was always pretty thin, and becoming ever more so as Cat and Kara have gotten closer over the last few episodes.

Of course, it also doesn’t help that Kara, James, and Winn regularly have conversations about Kara’s powers and/or secret identity right there in the office, where anybody could overhear. Frankly, Cat may be the last to find out. For all we know, the guys in Payroll have been buzzing about Supergirl working in the office for weeks now!

I’m kind of conflicted about the number of people who know Kara’s secret. On the one hand, it is a huge change from comic book traditions. But how much of our attachment to that paradigm is exactly that–tradition? Kara having a whole support team who know who she is does solve a lot of storytelling problems (how will I explain my sudden disappearance during a crisis this time?), and gives her a lot of practical help. If done right, it could be a refreshing change.

Of course, it is yet to be seen whether Cat will keep her secret, or the journalist in her will want to publicize it.

Interesting factoids: Superman knows Martian Manhunter. I wonder if he knows that MM is currently masquerading as Hank Henshaw.

Henshaw really liked that kryptonite knife he had, and wants it back (I chuckled at that line, and also at Henshaw casually telling Alex that he can read minds).

There exists in this universe a fabric that can be made into reasonably comfortable looking outfits, which also provides complete protection from Kryptonite. Clark and Kara ought to look into upgrading their costumes when this whole Astra thing is over.

I was disappointed with pretty much everything in last night’s episode.

  • I was ok with the idea that Cat knew that Kara was Supergirl, but didn’t mention it explicitly. I don’t really like this state where everyone knows her not-so-secret identity.

  • The “secret” that they wanted to use against Cat was not the type of thing that people are ushered out of business for. She had a kid that she has financially supported. There’s no scandal there. That info going public isn’t going to hurt the company’s bottom line. Plus, it would have already been available during a public records search (which anyone would have done first, because it’s much, much easier and more legal to go to the county courthouse and ask for easily attainable information than to hack into a corporate server). I’m assuming that the writers were trying to mimic the Sony hack, but that they didn’t really understand why people got fired.

  • The already mentioned “join me - but i’m not going to tell you anything” from Astra.

  • Alex keeping Henshaw/J’onzz’s secret from Kara. Especially as Superman already knows. It makes sense that he’d not tell the rest of the DOA, but now that Alex knows, he may as well tell both of them. There’s no utility in the current state.

I still like the show enough, but that episode needed re-thinking.

I think we are supposed to read the episode as showing that Kat has known for a while; certainly Calista Flockhart seems to be playing it that way.

I like that someone as smart as Cat is smart enough to figure it out. And I don’t see why she would keep it a secret. It remains to be seen what they do with that knowledge.

Cat was resigning not out of fear of scandal, but to protect her son. That actually makes approximate sense.

Not to mention “your world is going to be destroyed! Just like mine was! I’m serious! I can help you!” not generating a response along the lines of “give me a few minutes, I’ll get an expert on the earth’s core on the phone, please explain to him what’s going on”.

Also, Astra is oddly confident that they’re not just going to kill her while they are holding her, which it seems they presumably could do as long as she’s in the kryptonite room. Why wouldn’t she worry about getting vivisected?

I liked J’onnz’s line.

“I can’t read Kryptonian minds. A fact which gives Superman a great deal of amusement.”

I’m cool with Cat revealing that she’s figured out who Kara is. It will be interesting to see how their relationship changes after this.

I’m more puzzled by J’onn revealing he’s not human mid battle. I mean, someone looks over to check on the boss and sees him with glowing eyes and screaming “That’s because I’m not human!”, that might make for an awkward after action report.

Also, some of the attack squad had hilariously bad powers. Did that one girl have a toxic burp attack?

Also also, it was nice to see Maxwell Lord breaking out the (literal) big guns, showing that he means it when he wants to defend humanity. And then it was hilarious when after taking out one dude he gloats and then suddenly remembers that these aliens are MUCH faster and stronger than he is - you know, right after his guard have been killed and he’s been tossed across the room.

I wonder what they were looking for in Lord’s lab, or if they were just drawing out Supergirl again?

Also, Jimmy Olsen is a true bro.
The only thing I really didn’t like was the continuation of “let’s keep MM identity secret from Kara”. Now, Kara is not the best at maintaining her OWN secret identity, as revealed by Cat Grant, but keeping secrets is just rift between sisters fodder.

Although I guess now we know who the other person that knows MM’s identity is now.

This would have been a better way to go.

I’d like to see Lobo show up on the show. Might be interesting if he were after J’onn J’onnzz instead of Supergirl. Or even Astra.

I did not recognize Emma Caulfied with the dark hair. Though in re watching it is obvious, though her voice sounds a bit different as well – not a huge difference, probably just being dramatic rather than semi comedic

The Toyman would have been great for some good old-fashioned Silver Age hijinks. (The Flash would certainly have known what to do with him.) Yet they used him here to expose yet more relationship angst. What a waste.

How could they not have a theme song that goes: Supe…Supe…Supe…Supergirl…girl…girl…

The Toyman was a great character. Now how did he get that deadly yo-yo built in prison? They’ve gotta let some of these characters escape to create more mayhem later. So now Lord knows Supergirl’s identity. What’s he going to do with it?

At least Winn finally let Kara know how he felt. It was really getting old watching him keep it bottled up.

Alex should’ve known to check for a bug.

I hope they bring back the Toyman. He has potential. Loved the little doll dressed the way he used to be in the Legion of Doom.

Yeah, as soon as she said “There’s nothing he can do to surprise me,” or whatever it was she said, I knew the scene would cut to a bug or something similar. So now we can add Maxwell Lord to the ever-growing list of people who know who Supergirl is. Really, she might as well not even bother with the whole secret identity thing.

I would like to pause at this point and acknowledge how much Alex was rocking that little black dress.
