I believe his “twist” was the original seeding thread which let people suggest names for the competition. Here’s his post:
The top four vote getters were Batman, Spider-Man, Superman, and Wolverine and they’re going to be the final four here. The only change I made was to rank the other sixty characters in order of seeding order rather than randomly.
You’re not going to see many surprises in Madness threads. The players that are most popular are obviously going to end up in the final rounds. The only way to avoid this is to deliberately match top competitors against each other in the early rounds so they knock each other out. And that has the disadvantage of making the final rounds easy walkovers.
