Superman and Doing the Right Thing

I’m trying to distill Superman’s attitude re: “always doing the right thing” into a catchphrase that doesn’t sound so Spike-Lee-esque. Anyone have any thoughts? How would (or has, if anyone has comics to reference) Supes put it himself?

With Great Power Comes…oh wait, wrong comic.

Though honestly I think the Great Power line sums the concept up better than anything I could come up with.

“With Great Power Comes” sounds like the tagline for a Superman porno.

How about “truth, justice, and the American way”?

“There is a right and a wrong in the universe, and the distinction between the two is not that difficult to make.” – Elliot S! Maggin

I’ll go with that. “Truth, Justice, and the American way” was coined during the cold war, when it was either follow the American way or succumb to godless Communism. As events have shown, the American way is not always accepted worldwide, and we must do more in cooperation with other nations than to believe we lead in always doing right.

Can’t agree with that, cochrane. Superman is about Truth Justice, and the American way. He doesn’t neccessarily force others into it, but it’s what he stands for fundamentally. Democracy, fair play, independance, treating people equally - you can argue America has not lived up to its ideal, but it the dunamental American idea.

My copy of Absolute Kingdom Come is inscribed with that.

I just reread both of the Maggin paperbacks in the last month or so. They hold up remarkably well.

And that line does indeed delivery truth with a capital T for Superman. And it’s worth trying to live by for the rest of us as well.

Lawful Good?

I still hold that Maggin is the only writer who ever understood Luthor.

Wasn’t Superman sort of a … well, you know?
