Superman & Jerry Seinfeld

Alright you guys, I want to jump in here now and point you to the best thing I’ve seen on the internet in a while. I hope I don’t embarass myself, but I did a quick search for this, and nobody’s mentioned it yet.
Hie thee over to AmericanExpress.com and check out the Adventures of Superman and Seinfeld doing, basically, a Seinfeld episode as an American Express commercial.
He makes dinner reservations as “Man of Steel” to get a good table. Guy comes up says, Superman, remember me, you saved me from… After he leaves, Jerry says, who was that guy. Superman: I have no idea…
I’ve been laughing all morning.
Oh, and hello. I’ve been wanting to start posting for a while, but…
Hi.

I saw Jerry Seinfeld on The Daily Show saying, “the commercials are only available on the Internet.” So howcum I have been seeing them endlessly on TV? They were funny the first 25 times or so, but are beginning to wear on me.

P.S. Oh, welcome to the Boards! Pie’s over there, did you bring your own coffee mug?

When I see the 25 times, I’ll get tired of them too. But I like the Roger Rabbit style animation/live action. Superman as a normal guy is always a good bit. Superman as a doofus is even better.

I got a mug. Thanx
btw, you’re my favorite poster.

I heard about this, not from TV (don’t have it). I love the Seinfeld show, and I like his stand-up comedy. But I don’t feel like hunting down what is essentially a commercial. I hate commercials.

Do they shove it (American Express) down your throat or is it pretty casual? Either way I don’t feel right about it.

They don’t really shove it down your throat at all. Slate was discussing it as a new form of product placement AS content. The gist is that some guy steals Jerry’s DVD player and by the time Superman gets it back, he’s pretty much trashed it. Replacement warranty is the pitch.

Oh, my dear, for that you can say you like Carrot Top singing rap and I’ll agree with you!

Ah! On your good side. Right off the bat.
Thank you, Eve

I saw that already, and found myself surprised to be upset over ruination of Superman’s character. Superman’s not a doofus, if anything, he supposed to be a dork (though in the early days, he was more of a sadist and a show-off). And Superman already has a regular guy person, he’s called Clark Kent!

OK, I can accept going to a website specifically to watch a commercial. I can even accept using a classic American icon for comic relief. But I absolutely cannot accept having to voluntarily sign up for spam to watch a commercial on a website.

It’s hard to believe that they’re showing them on TV - they are about 15 minutes long! Are you sure you haven’t just seen excerpts?

My feelings were about the same as pizzabrat’s. They brought Superman down to Jerry Seinfeld’s level. Since I didn’t like him in the first place, all the ad did was make me hate the portrayal of Superman. If they wanted to do an ad with the Three Stooges they should have bought those rights instead. I wouldn’t watch it again.

Oh, I’m sure they’re excerpts–about 15 or 30 seconds. Who does Supe’s voice? Sounds like Patrick “Puddy” Warburton.

Yeah, it does sound like Patrick Warburton. I was thinking the same thing.

The TV ads are just ads for the longer online clips. They’re not even excerpts; just teasers. And you don’t HAVE to sign up for spam; just make up a phony email address. It doesn’t check.

Personally, I thought it was hilarious. Obviously more a parody of Supes than an accurate portrayal, which is why I think it worked.

Just give them a BS address. They don’t check.
