What ever happened to that project? The one Nicolas Cage was supposed to star in?
The last I heard Kevin Smith had a script done for it, but the company that had rights to the movie (Warner Brothers?) rejected it. So then that guy who wrote The Saint (1997) began to work on it, and then from there, the hype just kind of faded. So does anyone know what the status of this project is?
Here’s the last update from Coming Attractions (http://www.corona.bc.ca/films/main.html):
March 22, 2000… Back in September 1998, a budding screenwriter named Alex Ford wrote a screenplay for a proposed Superman film. When Ford penned the script, he decided to go back to the character’s roots in comic books and give Superman/Clark Kent a diverse supporting cast of characters to play against. Characters like Daily Planet columnists Cat Grant, and Ron Troupe are there alongside Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen, as well as Mercy Graves, Lex Luthor’s personal assistant. As well as making sure his script had good character dialogue and gripping action sequences, Ford also made room to make his script well-versed in the comic book universe, making references to other DC Universe places and individuals (much like the Metropolis mentions in Batman Forever and Batman and Robin).
Unfortunately Ford’s script never seemed to make an impact to the WB executives developing the new Superman script, who it seemed wanted a established screenwriter with a proven track record and a name writing their revamp of the Man of Steel. Fabio2, the webmaster of the Superman Lives webpage, conducted an interview with Alex Ford last year and asked the writer a bit about his background and why he chose to pursue writing his own Superman movie script.
Now Ford’s unused Superman script, which features Lex Luthor and Metallo as the story’s antagonists, is avalable on the Web for reading.
