Supermarket items you miss

As a kid I loved the Vanilla flavored Capt Crunch with the Whale on the cover.
I would probably find them too sweet now, but I must have been the primary consumer of them. This was in the mid 70’s.

I’ll second the Carnation Breakfast Bars, a staple of my youth.

I’ll add: Baked Ramen. Seriously, have you ever read the nutritional information on the back of a pack of ramen? Seven or eight grams of fat per serving, and two servings per noodlebrick. That means if you eat a whole package, you’re getting 14-16g of fat! Gah! Baked ramen tasted just fine, and the noodles were baked rather than deep-fried, so they had maybe 2g per brick. Much more peace of mind eating that, lemme tell ya.

But, they don’t make 'em no more.

Chicken Helper, creamy garlic flavor. Why, oh, why did they discontinue this flavor? It was the best of all of them. [sob!]

Atkins Pickles.

Not so much because they are any better than Vlasic or something, but it was a local industry in Atkins, a few miles from where I grew up. You used to could get fried pickles at the local burger joint.

Campbell’s Chunky Beef Stroganoff

Apparently, Pop Shoppe is coming back.

Wait a minute…they don’t make Jello Pudding Pops anymore???!!! I have cut way down on the ice cream so really don’t go down that aisle anymore, but I am shocked to hear Pudding Pops are no more.

Well, you can still make your own…my mom used to make them for us using Dixie Cups! Spoon the pudding into the cups, put a stick or straw in the middle, freeze and peel off the cup. Mmmmmmm…

Some products that I miss:

Taco-flavored Doritos and Sour Cream-flavored Doritos

Teriyaki Rice Hamburger Helper

Sugar Free Koolaid…preferably Grape. Lately I can only find the sugar-added varieties.

Carnation Instant Breakfast…vanilla flavor

Philly cream cheese used to make a fabulous whipped salmon cream cheese.

I haven’t seen it on the shelves in at least five years.

There also used to be some chocolate cookies that were like chocolate flavored vanilla wafers. They were only sold in small black boxes and had a chocolate chip version. I don’t remember who made them but that’s another thing I haven’t seen on the supermarket shelves in a long time.

You can still buy Quisp cereal here.

I liked C.W. Post cereal, too. Had huge chunky nuggets of granola mmmmm.

The thing I miss most is a product called Fib Ribs… they were a TVP thing, kind of like a slab of jerky slathered in BBQ sauce.

Jinks, if you need Root Beer, let me know which kind you like. I’ve sampled over 200 types, and might be able to help you find your brand (with someone who will ship it direct to you, even). My favorites are Thomas Kemper and Henry Weinhard’s. The best name of a root beer I’ve ever tried was something I only found once in Bonifay, FL called Who Dat? Root Beer. Mmmmmmm root beer.

Cock N’ Bull Ginger beer

It was discontinued about two years ago, quietly enough that I didnt even know it was gone until the grocery store ran out. It can be found online now, for an exorbant price. sigh I used to go through two or three a week, and I hardly ever drink sodas.

Best ginger beer in the world… spicy without being overpowering, nice and smooth, not at all sickly sweet like ginger drinks tend to be. I have yet to find anything to replace it, and ive been looking everywhere!

I love Kellogg’s Cracklin’ Oat Bran cereal. It’s either bad for you breakfast cereal with its 7 grams of saturated fat per serving (due to coconut oil) or good for you snack with it’s high fiber content and vitamins and minerals added. I don’t see it on the shelves any more. That used to be an easy dinner for me.

Does anyone remember Pillsbury Space Food Sticks? I used to love these things.

I’m fairly certain they still make it, 'cuz I bought some a couple weeks ago–you are talking about the little packets of just the flavoring that make 2 quarts, right?

Tamryne: Have you tried Blenheim’s ginger ale? I dunno if it’s available in your area, but it’s quite good. Get the stuff with the red cap.

I hadn’t thought about Heydays in years. I ate a ton of those when I was a kid. Also plenty of Danish-Go-Rounds.

I miss Purple Passion soda and Spoon Candy. The latter was a Jello product I think; a nifty dessert sort of like a mousse with a candy layer on top. Very tasty and easy to whip up. Sigh.

Milkshake candy bars. Malted milk nougat and caramel covered in chocolate. And it didn’t matter how fresh the candy was, the wrapper always stuck to some of the caramel that showed through the chocolate.

Yeah, except it killed people.

I was gonna say… I had never heard of the stuff until I saw one of those forensic science programs showing how they tracked some E. Coli that poisoned lots of folks to apples that had been picked up off the ground near deer droppings. As soon as I saw “Odwalla,” I remembered that show.

I’ll second or third PB Maxx, those things were like crack (and who could forget the “penguin boxing” commercial?), and crunchy Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, also the Cookie Peanut Butter Cups they used to make. The Lay’s Applewood BBQ chips were fantastic as well.

It has been much too long since I had a MoonPie.

Man that box would never last long in my house.

Wasn’t that the kind that looked like dog kibble? If so, it was yummy. Like little teensy oatmeal cookies, but not too sweet.
