I’m not sure if there is a factual answer to this but I don’t know where to post the question. Actually, there are two questions so without further ado, I will post them.
1.0 Has a retiring Supreme Court Justice ever recommended his/ her replacement?
2.0 If so, has the recommended replacement ever been appointed?

Do you mean unsolicited advice, or do you include if the President asks the retiring justice for a recommendation?
(Not that I have an answer either way…)
Speaking with no evidence whatsoever, I don’t know of a justice making public recommendations, but I’m pretty sure they’ve been made in private.
