Surprises coming for voters for the Leopards-Eating-Faces Party

The media for the last year: GEE THE PRICE OF FOOD SURE HAS GONE UP, LOOK HOW EXPENSIVE FOOD IS, IT MUST BE THE PRESIDENT’S FAULT AND YOU SHOULD VOTE FOR SOMEONE ELSE WHO’LL MAKE GROCERIES CHEAP

The media now: whoops turns out the president doesn’t set the price of food. how bout that fellas

No biggie – just pass a law making females ineligible to vote for electors. Problem solved!

Joking aside, the 19th amendment makes the “male” part of the text obsolete, just as the 26th adjusts the “21 years of age” part.

Aw, there ya go, spoilin’ all my fun.

Since when was CNN paywalled?

A few weeks ago. They’re trying to get people to pay.

Oh, well. I don’t get to read it. I assume it says something along the lines of ‘Americans voted for Trump so that he’d lower grocery prices, but his tariffs are going to increase them’ or something like that. Would’ve been nice to read, though.

Yeh, CNN still lets you read a few things for free but slams you to sign up for everything else. I used to use that as my first online stop for news but to hell with them. I’m better off just dropping in here to supplement the WashPost and Boston Globe.

There’s a thread somewhere about which news sources are still available without paywalls.

Eh, well, at this point I’m avoiding as much news as possible.

ETA: Actually, yesterday I stumbled across NewsNation, a cable channel that some research indicated was rated as “Center”. The segment I saw was an anchor and commentator gobsmacked by the Gaetz nomination.

Still making up my mind whether they’re worth watching. Some concerning items on their website.

Remind me; which is the Party of “But what if we didn’t?”

“What if we didn’t” do what, exactly? The federal government has very little to do with the process of actually holding elections. It’s the states that schedule everything, print the ballots, set up polling places, count and certify results, and all that.

Currently, yes.

Republicans create laws that violate the constitution constantly. Then someone has to get the judicial system to stop them. If the states decide to violate the 22nd amendment, how long will it take to stop that?

What does that even mean?

Bother to pay attention to the votes, or let the states vote at all.

Responding to this (quite a ways back in the thread - sorry.) I’ll quote Little_Nemo:

They will never long for the Biden administration.

It doesn’t matter how bad things turn out under Trump; the hard-core will never admit it’s a problem, or at least that the problem is his fault.

It’s like the news stories one sees occasionally about a child who dies due to the parents’ religious opposition to basic medical care. I’ve never seen one in which the guilty parents admit to even a shred of regret over their decisions. They can’t !

If they admitted any error, it would be admitting that their child died for nothing. So they rationalize the outcome and insist that it was . . . I dunno, God’s will or something. Anyway it was meant to be, and they didn’t do anything wrong.

Trump and the Magats will mistreat or abuse or starve our country into catastrophe and then insist it’s not a catastrophe at all. Or that it would have been far worse had it not been for Trump.

You’ve become completely divorced from reality. Seek professional help.

You’re projecting rather hard, you are pretty clearly in complete denial about what authoritarians can actually do. You appear to think the laws and the Constitution are magical artifacts that can compel obedience without human aid.

The reality is that we’re now way off the map. Maybe this administration will limit itself to a bit of grifting but hobble its ability to do anything big by its own incompetence. Maybe Project 2025 will come to fruition and the right will control or influence every branch of government for a generation.

The truth is likely to be somewhere in the middle of those two. But there’s little reason to assume we can predict where.

That’s a realistic summation. Der_Trihs isn’t being realistic. He’s disappeared up his own ass into “All hope is lost, Trump can do whatever he wants and nobody can stop him, the tides themselves obey his command, may as well smother your children in their sleep so they won’t have to suffer in the purges and the death camps and the nuclear war and the post-atomic horror after which all life shall perish and it will be as if mankind never existed” type doomspiraling. And because this is the Pit, I can say that without this counting as a hijack. I’ve gotten sick of his stinking up every single Trump thread with his psychosis, and he’s admitted in other threads that he’s barely been sleeping and has been hyperfixated on the news. He needs intervention by a professional or someone who loves him and cares about him.
