I found out that weekend that I know several people that voted for Trump because they believe he’s going to be sending out big stimulus checks as soon as he’s elected.
These are young men that aren’t political at all, they have no idea about the platforms and policies of either candidate……they just saw some stupid stuff on TikTok and YouTube that they really believed, so they all ran out and voted for Trump, not even voting in any of the other races on the ballot.
I was pretty distressed about it, especially after I found out some of these videos had millions of views.
They are positively giddy about Trump winning and they’re full of plans for their free money. They are going to get their big surprise when no checks show up, and I’m looking forward to it.
It really is scams all the way down.
I know another Trump supporter that’s been working for the State Department for 15 years or so and he now finds himself in danger of being unemployed, plus he’s married to a Central American woman he met while on assignment. I’m not sure of her exact status, I know she’s in the US legally but that may not be enough to keep her here, especially since she’s Hispanic and from Central America.
What? This is the first I’ve heard of this. And I have a FB friend who is a full-on Trump cultist.
He may wish to take an assigment oversea and have his wife go through the Expeditious Naturalization Program. Mind you, IMNAL and certainly not an immigration lawyer.
Seems to me that I heard a bit of this rumor awhile back but never followed up on the stupidity. It’s hard to believe people actually fell for this.
Sadly it’s one among many. It’s surprising for example all the things people believed democrats would do in the next term that they made zero effort to achieve in the last 4 years.
Reading things into candidate’s platforms that they never said (or just plain people hearing what they want to hear) is a problem with a long and bipartisan history in this country. I remember people in 2010 complaining that Obama and Congressional Democrats never put George W. Bush or Goldman Sachs on trial, when that was never something they expressed any intention of doing in the first place.

I think I know that story, the man ended up with a nickname of Mighty Maxson as I recall. Not just because he got them all pregnant though. It’s because of the punchline at the end: The voyage took nine months.
At any rate I do bet Musk has fantasies in that direction, the Republicans have something of a fixation on “breeding”. As white nationalists often do.
I hadn’t heard of it until I heard about the friends that believed it….all I could find online was this brief Newsweek story from March….
…along with some YouTube videos with attention grabbing titles like $1800 Stimulus Checks for Everyone if Trump is Elected. I watched one of them. The body of the videos starts out talking about how Trump’s record shows he loves loves stimulus checks and sending money to everyone and lots of people believe he’s going to do it again, you have to get at least 5 minutes in before you find out it’s not a sure thing.
I also found a couple of articles talking about how people doing door to door campaigning were encountering people that believed this. It seems this belief was especially prevalent in African-American communities.
I recall it coming up earlier in the Where did the 16 million Democratic votes go? thread. It was “all over Tiktok”, apparently.
The sad irony too of “Those dirty Dems and their inflation… Trump on the other hand is going to give out more stimulus checks”
ETA: of course, stimulus was the right approach, and that’s why it was bipartisan. But inflation was the lesser evil that we then had to swallow (alongside the worldwide supply shock)

Well, I’ve been warning people what a disingenuous fabulist and bloviating narcissist Musk actually is for over a decade, and the actual danger his ambitions to become the dominant if not exclusive provider of space access for both national security and commercial interests are for going on five years. The naked promotion of fascism and far-right ideology are newer developments (which I think he kind of stumbled into after seeing the frenetic response to bigoted memes by his loyal base of wanna-be tech ‘li’l bros’) but the elements of his desperately attention-craving narcissism, need to push others down to elevate himself, and tissue paper-skinned inability to whether even the mildest rebuke without spastically overreacting—usually on Twitter that he is so addicted to that he made a ‘joke’ offer to buy it and then when forced into following through he threw multiple temper tantrums until he lined up investors to back most of his US$44B liability, after which he ran the company like a medieval lord governing his personal fiefdom and telling advertisers to “Go fuck yourself! for not wanting their ads to appear alongside anti-semitic, gay- and transphobic, misogynistic, and conpiranoia-promoting posts—have always been there since the beginning.
So yeah, fuck that guy and anyone still inexplicably promoting his supposed tech genius brilliance and almost wholly fabricated reputation as an innovator and hard-driving-but-successful leader who has actually drafted off of the competence of others while relying almost exclusively on his talent as a prevaricating“hype man” and seemingly connatural ability to “cloud men’s minds” when it comes to all of the failed promises and endlessly delayed products and capabilities he promotes to great fanfare only to never mention again until someone brings it up in an interview and he responds by mumble-babbling onto another topic usually having to do with how the government, a cabal of progressives, or the media os unfairly attacking him for just being a struggling businessman in a world where the government weighs him down with onerous taxation and regulation while providing no benefit in return.

Wow, that’s a lot to unpack. I guess I never paid much attention to him or his dealings other than to ignore the hype over his cars early on. Figured he was just another loud-mouthed rich guy. Turns out he’s just another huckster, so he and Trump are soulmates.
Yes, dammit. I voted for the Democrats because I supported their platform of seizing everyone’s guns, declaring our borders open, and forcibly preforming sex change operations on school children. And they didn’t do any of that.
Could explain why Trump performed better among black voters than expected.

They wonder why the government didn’t forgive their student loans along with their kids’ college is so much more expensive with no financial aid.
They don’t get their mail because the post office is so dysfunctional.
They get warned not to take their annual out-of-the-country vacation because the danger to Americans is so high.
