I remember saying in 2016 on social media before the election that Trump had mental health issues like narcissism (and just stupidity in general) and would be a disaster as a President.
I was informed by some of his supporters that Trump is always the smartest person in the room and was asked how could Trump possibly have mental health issues when he was such an extremely successful business genius.
These people apparently thought The Apprentice was real. They had no idea of his bankruptcies or multiple failed business ventures (or what a piece-of-shit he was in general). The country desperately needed Trump to run the government like his businesses so he could MAGA! after Obama ruined it.
I know you’re being wry, but just for the record — it’s a popular misconception that the Jonestown cultists all lined up and happily and willingly drank the poison. In actual fact, a whole lot of people were reluctant, some seriously so, verging up to openly rebellious. Many were forced to drink the poison at gunpoint. Some were simply shot.

To me, it depends on context. If the “after” contradicts the “before” (“I’m not a racist, but the immigrants are stealing America from real Americans”), then the premise applies; if not (“The Axis had major successes early in WWII, but ended up losing”), it doesn’t.
