Recall that Trump has an approval rating of 44% and a strong approval rating of 26%, down from 28% on July 1st. These are trendline approval ratings, so their error margin is lower. Trump is not a popular President and his electoral support hinges on persuadable people.

I don’t know that trump needs “electoral support”. He’s not running again. If he’s president after Jan 2029 it won’t be because he won an election.
Yes, trump’d like a good midterm result in 2026. But as long as the propaganda keeps pushing the MAGA line, an awful lot of House reps know they’ll be judged (or primaried) on their fealty to the MAGA project, regardless of whether it’s working or not working for the working class.
Nah. One other thing that characterizes them is the certainty that nobody has the right of refusal.
Especially from family. And especially if those making them upset are “elders”.
Remember their fixation about “cancel culture” and “divisiveness” that translates into everyone else just should suck it up if made uncomfortable.

My FIL is a passive-aggressive and controlling twat. He knows that I’m estranged from my sister (fascist) and he always asks how she’s doing. Same with his brother, we had told FIL we had no interest in interacting with him and he didn’t tell us he would be there. He relies on everyone just accommodating him when he ignores our boundaries, but my new policy is just to let him experience the consequences of his boundary crossing. It really freaks him the fuck out. He’s one of those “agree to disagree” type of idiots.

Trump is unpopular because of what he’s doing. I have trouble backing this claim, because there’s so little polling evidence evaluating it. But by way of example, I don’t see a groundswell for tougher immigration policy and approval for it is underwater.
Pew’s data shows a predictable partisan breakdown. Most Republicans think Trump is honest and a good role model; Democrats, independents, and normal people disagree.
Most worrisome to me is that Republicans seem to be acting like the midterms don’t matter.

They think the voting in the midterms won’t matter. The fix, be that gerrymandering, or vote counting, or voter disenfranchisement, or …, is already in.

The Rs are now practicing the post-democratic politics of sham elections. Just as are done in the countries they most admire: Russia, Hungary, & Turkïye.

I could envision a coalition of “blue” states forming, with the primary goal of reconstituting replacements for the federal services that the Felonocracy has destroyed. They will reject his right to marshall the Guard in their states, or his right to bully them, by declaring that he is operating outside the bounds of Constiutional intent. They will not withhold the services they establish from the people of the “red” states but may decide to snub the governments of those states. It will be accomplished in an otherwise non-hostile way that makes pursuit of anything like civil war extremely difficult to justify.
I wish I could afford Italy at the moment. It looks like Portugal could be doable but for a variety of reasons Mexico City or another of the safer cities in Mexico seems more likely.
The ongoing tightening of “golden visas” worldwide suggests that any American lacking other birthright citizenship or residency rights ought to get their hip-pocket authorization to live elsewhere secured ASAP and definitely before the 2026 elections.
