I think that free and fair elections are very unlikely. I assume that as Trump expands troop deployments to other cities, one of their missions will be “election integrity,” to keep people,of co’or from voting.
Sadly that goes without saying, back in those days, when Republicans thought that prohibition was “freedom”. in 1920 Eugene V. Debs, the Socialist Party candidate, ran for U.S. President while imprisoned. He was serving a 10-year sentence for violating the Espionage Act by speaking out against World War I. Despite being incarcerated, he received nearly a million votes in the election.
There is a lot of rigging to see that it is the right wing party the one with the unfair advantage, we do have to also support efforts to counter that.
One has to point out that: yes, it is unfair, but progressives can and did win later even with that rigging, the main point is: do not stop fighting and voting just because it is unfair.
The idiot managed to increase his popular vote total in '20, over '16 by 17.8%, despite demonstrating that he was a hapless, incoherent baffoon; the same Felon in '24 increased his popular vote total over '16 by 22.7%, an increase over '20 of 4.1%, despite an enomous cloud of negatives shadowing him. That some folks have grumbled about shenanigans is pretty well supporte by those figures.
That, and black men didn’t turn out for Kamala like they did for Obama or Biden.
Yeah, no. We’re emigrating and I don’t think that there is a precedent to current times in American history, I think you need to look at the likes of Mussolini, Pinochet and Hitler.
I am so glad I never had kids.
Well another lesson I got (maybe from a poster in the SDMB) is that “Democracy is not for sissies”
Mind you, I’m not opposed on leaving the country, but there are many Hispanics here that are suffering, so I will fight with my support and volunteer work, months before the mid term elections. And this is not because of a just romantic ideal, I do so because most of the people are not supporting what Cheetoliny is doing now.
For many of the marginalized, it sure is.
I think that America is irredeemable and was never much of a democracy. I also think that the best thing for the world is for America to collapse quickly, like the Soviet Union, before it does more harm in the world. In short, I think the entire country is a bunch of faces for the leopards.
ETA: Decent countries don’t elect insane fascist game show hosts to be president.
Well, it is not altogether obvious to me that the sudden collapse of the Soviet Union turned out to be a net positive. It looks to me like the Russian “Republic” is not an improvement over the USSR, and in some ways is considerably worse. An abrupt collapse of the USA is likely to be seriously fucked up for a very large number of people.
240 years of democracy is a very generous description of America and would probably come as a shock to the enslaved people who built it. It wasn’t until the voting rights act of 1965 that we even attempted to enfranchise all adults and the Supreme Court was dismantling it by 2013; so more like a 47 year kinda democracy, but not really.
Not for the Poles, Latvians, Moldovans, Estonians and Lithuanians.
The Soviet Union (Russia) collapsed alright, but guess who is doing more harm now?
The point is that I see where you are coming from, but history tells me that the US was much worse in the past, it is terrible now, but the problem is that collapse with no democracy is a recipe for even worse results.
Yes, Russia is a problem, but it is less of a problem than the Soviet Union was, just like when the US collapses, it will still be a problem for the rest of the world, but ideally less of a problem. We are the world leader for the anti-democracy and anti-science movements. Hopefully, the collapse of the US will mark the high tide for neo-fascism and it will begin to recede.
… I lift up my guitar and pray
We won’t get fooled again
Meet the new boss
Same as the old boss
Not even the socialists think that accelerationism is a god tactic nowadays.
(this is opinion, but I do remember the history and I do think they explain it better.)

Historically it has been shown to be a failed ultra-left tactic. Two main examples of this tactic in a historical setting would be the tactics promoted by the Comintern during the so-called Third Period as well as the CPUSA’s line during the early 30’s (“It has to get worse before it can get better.”).The Third Period featured very adventurist tactics due to the fundamentally incorrect analysis that global capitalism had entered into such a crisis that its collapse was inevitable. This led to such theories as “social-fascism”, and the German Communist Party proclaiming things like “After Hitler, us!”. Many communists during this period felt that attacks on the working class, Hitler’s election and his mishandling of the economy, the Depression etc. would revolutionize mass segments of the proletariat.
But what happened in reality was much different, fascism took root amongst a large strata of the working classes in places like Italy and Germany, while the rest of the proletariat attached itself to the bourgeois parties.
I’m thinking ‘America 2.0 on Kickstarter’ - figuring out the stretch goals is going to be a challenge.
America’s collapse is happening, we’re experiencing it right now. The idea that we are going to win in the mid terms and somehow reset to before Trump is absurd, huge sections of the federal government have been dismantled, the security services and military have been politicized and half our populace is completely un equipped for life in the 21st century. The best possible outcome is collapse without causing catastrophic harm to the world, but it is no means a given. The continuation of America means the continuation of American fascism and fascism pursues territorial expansion through military force. Those are the choices. Any talk about earlier precedence in American history is just complacent fantasy.
Uh, back then a lot of what Trump and henchmen are dismantling now did not exist. a good number of people are beginning to miss those things and finally do notice how dumb it was to vote for Trump.
Anyhow, as you mention, getting better after the collapse is not a given, someone has to be here to fight to make it better. And really, a lot of the people that do not support Trump now expected things to be better. And now Trump is telling all that the critics are Democratic agents.
No amount of propaganda from Trump can make it so for the many that do realize now that they made a mistake.
Wrong thread
Yes. There is a great deal of wrong in this thread.
