Surprises coming for voters for the Leopards-Eating-Faces Party

Correction from Colorado. He was never found guilty of the Federal crime of insurrection. SCOTUS specifically pointed that out.

He was never found guilty of insurrection in Colorado either. A state judge deemed that he had engaged in insurrection during a civil proceeding.

It wasn’t that long ago that Roe v. Wade was a settled issue. You’re right, just because they couldn’t wiggle around it in a sane world doesn’t mean they can’t now.

Of course not, he’s immune to the law.

And that’s how he gets around those pesky constitutional problems. He always has plausible deniability.

Give me one example

Agreed. There are surprisingly few examples of reporters (let alone Trump flunkies) being willing to go on the record about Trump’s misconceptions about tariffs. One of the few I’ve seen:

Few seem willing to be as direct as that writer was about the fact that Trump believes something that’s plainly not true.

Yes. We’re seeing such assertions not because the claims are plausible, but out of (I believe) emotional need.

Well, it may not be a hijack if you look at it from the standpoint of ‘here’s another person clinging to denial of what may result from their vote–and needing to convince others that their vote Really Wasn’t That Bad.’

The particular surprise coming for such people is that others actually can see what they’re trying to do.

If you look at people with a history of publicly arguing two things;

  • Biden was fine, he just had one bad debate, he could have won! and
  • Trump can’t do much to harm Americans and America; he will be constrained by law, by business, and by other politicians—so people should just STOP talking about all the bad things they think he will do!

…it’s a fair bet that people arguing both these theories had a major problem with voting for a woman (or possibly just for a woman-of-color). And they couldn’t bring themselves to do it–even though they genuinely and sincerely despise Donald Trump. And so they didn’t vote for Harris.

And now, like every human being throughout history, they have to justify their choice–to themselves and to everyone else.

Obviously we can’t know if this is what’s going on with some people. Only they can tell us (and it’s unlikely that they will). But I think the hypothesis that this is behind a certain pattern of posting, is a reasonable read on human nature. They failed to vote to stop Trump, and they hear the sound of the approaching leopards. And they have to deal with it somehow.

The ‘what Trump believes about tariffs’ citation:

“It can’t happen here.”

Are these people also deeply disappointed with their “childhood” hero Hulk Hogan?

Yeah. The tendency to believe that must be a human universal. (Benefiting hungry leopards through the millennia.)

You open a perplexing new avenue of inquiry.

Not quite true. A legal immigrant who is not yet a citizen must also have a Green Card.

To be more precise, one is supposed to provide “documentation to their employers to show their identity and authorization to work.” This webpage lists which documents are acceptable for completing the I-9 Form.

When the 14th Amendment was new, there were several people who lost their elective position because they were found to have engaged in insurrection. There was no law required for this and most, if not all, of them were not found guilty of insurrection in a court of law. So requiring a guilty verdict or a law enforcing the 14th Amendment goes against established practice.

You are correct. Sometimes people even have Social Security Cards that are specifically marked as “Not Valid for Employment.” But since we weren’t talking about immigrants I didn’t feel the need to go out into the weeds here.

Which Congress had to pass a specific act in order to do.

And then Congress mass-forgave all of them anyway in an act which specifically called for an end to prosecuting them, so I’m not sure that’s the example you want to bring up.

A sizeable fraction of Republicans will not always roll over and take whatever MAGA wants to insert in their nether regions.

Wyoming is the reddest of the States. Seventy-seven percent of voters are registered as Republican. Of the 23 counties, 21 are solidly Republican. The Freedom Caucus, which is all MAGA all the time, won control of the state legislature in the recent election. I believe it was early Fall when the Freedom Caucus tried to order the County Clerks to remove all the ballot drop boxes. Every one of the County Clerks flatly refused. So there is one good example.

That law enforces the 15th Amendment, not the 14th.

Read your own cite. That Amnesty Act has been ruled to not apply to future insurrections.

Which is why he is in prison even as we speak.

There are people who have spent the last four years combing through the Constitution and “settled law” for any loophole they can find. And it turns out there are lots of them. The Constitution is big on laws, not so much on how to enforce them.
