I still subscribe to our one remaining local paper online (because I support local journalism), and it takes me about five minutes to go through it. Most national news is at least a day late. Very sad.

The population of Dawson County, Nebraska is a bit over 24,000. Of course, that includes children, spouses, elderly etc. The 1/8 of the population about to be unemployed likely supports at least another 1/8 directly, and as noted they won’t have money to spend on other local businesses.
This is gonna hurt.
I suspect that until most MAGA voters are hurt very personally more than once, they won’t recognize the connection between their politics and the beatings life keeps handing them.
Like alcoholics, they’re not gonna be motivated to change until after they’ve nearly been destroyed by their actions.
IOW, Dawson County NE needs several more severe beatings after this one. I wish it were not so, but I sincerely believe it is so. Working in reality is part of what they’re not doing and I’m trying to.
You are an optimist. I think that a plunging economy may just convince them they need to MAGA harder.

I think this is more likely:
One thing the fascist right is historically good at — particularly Trump, who is especially adept — is redirecting people’s blame to a scapegoat when their successes fail to materialize. And given that the right-wing base is (a) highly receptive to claims that favorite enemies are at fault and (b) highly resistant to introspective reconsideration of their own beliefs and assumptions, this turns out to be an extremely effective tactic.
So, yeah. When MAGA fails, this won’t drive away true believers, it’ll just fuel their rage at the usual adversaries who somehow obstructed and sabotaged the path to a MAGA paradise.
This is very true but often this can also turn into “friendly fire” as the fascist movement splits into factions: “No matter what, I can’t be at fault, but other members of MAGA can be”
We’re seeing a bit of that happening.
Hopefully such bickering and blaming will be enough of a distraction to minimize future harm.
ETA: I am not saying that political parties cannot have disagreements, or even factions. But it’s different with authoritarian groups which have a clear in-group and out-group, and the latter can be (literally) demonized.
There’s some speculation this might actually be a case of a leopard eating its usual prey, albeit with somewhat more cunning that usual. That is, if her brother wanted custody of the child, this could make it easier for him to get it.

Because her brother is not married to this woman. We only assume he would be because of how the nuclear family has been normalized in our culture.

From reading that article, they were never married. They had a relationship when the boy was born, but broke up about a year later.
Just the national news? My local paper has the local news a day late. They built a huge printing facility, but closed/sold that in 2021 and the paper is now only printed 6 days a week (no Saturday) about 3 hours away.
That’s so sad…
