I need you to sit on the thinking step and think about what you’ve done.

“Olive oil is people!”
Did Popeye eat Olive Oyl?
Nope; spinach. [whoosh!! ]

Farmers are getting nervous, now that RFKjr announced he wants to ban high fructose corn syrup and seed oils, both billion dollar crops in Trump Country.
If RFK Jr. fails to get enough votes from Republicans to be confirmed, they’ll say this is due to his history of being pro-choice.
But it will actually be because of the $$$$ they’re getting from lobbyists for Big Ag.

(Some commentators believe that if the Republicans make a ‘HEY WE’RE A CO-EQUAL BRANCH AND NOT MERE RUBBER-STAMPING SYCOPHANTS FOR TRUMP’ stand, it will be over RFK Jr (and no one else).)
Sounds about right.
So give the appearance of not being a rubberstamp over something neither they nor trump care about. Then go back to bootlicking rubber stamp once the TV cameras are pointed elsewhere.
Governance as performance art. Sigh.

Governance as performance art.
Pretty much.
As we all do from time to time, I suspect, I have to wonder what any of the Founders would make of all this…
Let’s be honest. They’d be appalled that a black woman (never mind half-Asian!–only they wouldn’t have used the word Asian) was the runner up for the presidency. In their day, that would have made her the Vice President (and then just wait for them to blow a gasket when they find out that, for another half day at least, she already IS the Vice President!).

They’d be appalled that a black woman (never mind half-Asian!–only they wouldn’t have used the word Asian) was the runner up for the presidency.
Good point. Whatever views they had on the idea that the government should be run with integrity and honesty, they certainly would not be able to imagine it being run by a woman or by a non-white man.
Still, even though Trump is white and male, I have a feeling they might have looked a trifle askance at his doings.

Governance as performance art. Sigh.
Always has been.

In my experience, one way to really upset a Republican is to call all the various farm supports socialism and farmer welfare.
They have a million excuses, and all you have to do is say “Yeah, but that’s true for [whatever appropriate analog] as well.”
For instance, I’m not sure how farmer supports are structured, but for a lot of corporate welfare their excuse is “that’s not a handout, it’s a tax break! They’re just handing over less of their own money to the government”. Except they only want to lower taxes on people they like, and occasionally even increase them on people they don’t.

Re: banning seed oils. Aren’t all cooking/eating oils except olive oil made from seeds? What are we supposed to cook with? Petroleum? Whale oil?
Animal fats. Which also have issues. Really, the biggest problem with cooking oils is the quantity people consume and switching to a different oil or fat doesn’t fix that.
As well as olive oil being (mostly) from the fleshy part of the olive, avocado oil is also from the fruit and not the pit, and coconut oil, too.

Well reducing sugar would be beneficial, I’m not sure if you’re hinting that HFCS is worse than other sugars?
Nope. There’s way too many added sugars in our food these days. I mostly cook from scratch, when I eat pre-prepared food I’m always startled by the amount of sweetness and salt in the food. We need less added sugar in the food. I’d rather we be growing more plants for nutrition than making more sugar.
Also:

IMO as long as HFCS is not only vastly cheaper than white sugar but is also vastly cheaper than most other ingredients except water, it’s going to be over-used in every product it goes into. If the HFCS price doubled and was expected to stay that way into the far future, a LOT of HFCS-containing products would be reformulated to contain less HFCS. And probably be less sweet as a result of not replacing the now-expensive HFCS with has-always-been-expensive cane or beet sugar.

And there goes his support from the ultra-Orthodox.
This may come as a shock, but the (presumably) Jewish Ultra-Orthodox have been cooking in various oils for millennia with no problem. Beef tallow and butter are perfectly OK (although not when used together) and there is also the traditional schmaltz, which is refined chicken fat. It’s lard they won’t use. Ditto for Muslims following their dietary laws.

(Some commentators believe that if the Republicans make a ‘HEY WE’RE A CO-EQUAL BRANCH AND NOT MERE RUBBER-STAMPING SYCOPHANTS FOR TRUMP’ stand, it will be over RFK Jr (and no one else).)
Thought they already pushed back against Gaetz. I’m OK with them also pushing back against RFK, Jr, too, just to be clear.

The main issue here is mixing meat and dairy. Butter can only be used for dairy meals, while tallow and schmaltz can only be used for meat meals. Vegetable oils are neutral, and can be used for anything, which makes them much more versatile and sensible to have around the house.
They’re also cheap and last forever at room temperature, which is helpful if you’re not a rich schmuck.

Tallow and lard and butter, like the ancestors did.
And goose fat. Another reason to annex Canada and their greasy geese.
To be fair, you can get a lot of schmaltz from even one Canadian Gosling.
I see what you did there.

Okay, somebody needs to rewrite this song with lyrics referring to Der Trumpf. (Springtime for Donald?).
I’m your huckleberry:
I’m seeing a musical out of all this. Springtime for Trumpster and America! Nuclear winter for Korea and Japan! Springtime for Kushner and Ivanka! Come on, alt-righties, go ahead and spooge your pants! * Stranger

Gaetz was all behind the scenes. The fight (and vote) over RFK Jur. is going to happen in public. That’s taking things to a different level.
