Survey - Smokers and Former Smokers

  1. How many times have you tried to smoking?
    {X} 1or 2

  2. When you are trying to quit smoking, is it easier to quit with friends and family around to support you, rather than to do it alone?
    {X} yes

Not sure I could have quit at all if my husband hadn’t quit with me.

  1. How many different methods for quitting have you tried?
    {X} 1 or 2

  2. What method(s) have you tried? (Mark all that apply.)On the back of this survey, list the brands of the products, if any.
    {X} Cold turkey
    {X} Other – hypnosis

  3. How many times have you succeeded in quitting for any period of time?
    {X} 0 to 2

  4. What’s the longest amount of time that you have quit for?
    {X} 1 year or more

  5. What methods have worked best for you? (Mark all that apply.)
    {X} Cold turkey

  6. At what age did you begin smoking?
    {X} 13 to 18 years

9.If you could go back to when you started smoking , would you still have started?
{X} no

Why? It was one of the stupidest decisions I ever made. I started smoking because I thought it was cool, which gives some indication of how rational and mature my thought processes were at the time.

  1. Are you still smoking?
    {X} no

Why? Because I never want to go through the hassle of quitting again – the first few days were sheer misery – and because I really enjoy not smoking. I like never having to think about whether I have my cigarettes, whether I have enough cigarettes, whether my lighter is about to die, whether I have emergency matches, whether I can smoke at the places I’m going, whether I’ve completely put out the last cigarette I smoked as I left the house, etc. etc. etc. It’s freeing!

I also enjoy being able to take a deep breath to the very bottom of my lungs without coughing, being able to lie down to go to sleep at night without coughing, being able to climb a flight of stairs without getting short of breath, and so on. I like not smelling like smoke and having our house not smell like smoke, and I don’t miss cleaning the disgusting yellow-brown greasy film off of everything, especially windows. I love not spending the buttloads of money that cigarettes cost. I love not feeling helpless, addicted, and tied to cigarettes.

Why? After the addiction is established, I don’t think one ever gets over it. It’s a constant battle.

  1. Are you still smoking?
    { } yes
    {x} no
Why? Let me qualify my answer. I still smoke on occasion, when I drink (which is fairly rare), but it’s not a daily or even monthly thing. I don’t enjoy drinking at all unless I can smoke, and sometimes I really want a drink.
    Additional Comments:
At present, I am still addicted to nicotine, so I chew lots of nicotine gum. I find that nicotine helps me concentrate. Apparently, I’m not alone is this: http://scienceblog.com/cms/node/1832.

  1. Are you still smoking?
    { } yes
    {x} no
Why? Mostly because my husband is very against it. He became less and less tolerant as time went on, and it became a huge issue in our relationship. While I love smoking, I love him more, so it was the cigarettes that had to go. Whoever says you can’t quit for someone else is full of it. I think, ultimately, most people quit for someone else.

  1. How many times have you tried to quit smoking?
    {X} 1or 2

  2. When you are trying to quit smoking, is it easier to quit with friends and family around to support you, rather than to do it alone?
    {X} yes
[I didn’t actually want anyone to ask how I was doing or bring it up in any way. The only support that mattered was not actively smoking next to me or in my home. As such, the best support I got was my husband quitting as well.]

  3. How many different methods for quitting have you tried?
    {X} 1 or 2

  4. What method(s) have you tried? (Mark all that apply.)On the back of this survey, list the brands of the products, if any.
    {X} Cold turkey

  5. How many times have you succeeded in quitting for any period of time?
    {X} 0 to 2

  6. What’s the longest amount of time that you have quit for?
    {X} 1 year or more
[Jan 4 will be 2 years.]

  7. What methods have worked best for you? (Mark all that apply.)
    {X} Cold turkey

  8. At what age did you begin smoking?
    {X} 13 to 18 years

9.If you could go back to when you started smoking , would you still have started?
{X} no
Why?
**Because it was freaking idiotic. What were the perceived benefits before I had that first puff, I wonder? I wasn’t cooler or thinner or happier, I was just short on cash, smelling bad, and risking my health. **

  1. Are you still smoking?
    {x} no
    Why?
**The second I saw my positive pregnancy test, I knew I could never smoke again. I didn’t give a crap about my own health, and I would bitch about the money it cost, but it was never enough to make me say NEVER AGAIN. Knowing I was responsible for another life meant I could never consider it again. Not only did my baby deserve a safe environment in the womb, she deserved to not be exposed to my smoke in any form, see my horrid example (my own mother’s example definitely influenced me) and she deserved not to lose her mother prematurely because of stupidity. I haven’t had a single puff in the past two years. **

    { } no

    Additional Comments:

I think I could quit anytime I want. I base this on the fact that since my parents don’t know that I smoke, I do not smoke when I am visiting them, and have gone a week at their house without so much as a thought, or a desire, to light up. It’s just that I still enjoy it, hence I still do it.

Why? I succeeded in stopping. It was smelly, costly, and very unhealthy.
