9.If you could go back to when you started smoking , would you still have started?
{x} yes
{ } no
Why? I don’t regret it. I know what is it I’m “missing”; I know I do enjoy smoking; I know that not doing so is my choice and not a result of peer pressure or of Dad’s too-little-too-late parental speeches.
Are you still smoking?
{ } yes
{x} no
Why? I had to choose between smoking or movies (tiny allowance). The movies were better. There’s still times when I think “damn man, if I was a smoker I’d sure like one right now!” but when I die I’d like to leave behind curtains that don’t smell of my cigs 9 years after my last one… unlike Dad.
Additional Comments: Quit within weeks of starting but like I mentioned, basically because Travolta won over Lucky. If I’d had a more normal allowance I might still be smoking now.

Additional Comments: I quit smoking the one time I tried for 3 years. I quit because I was developing a cough. I later found out that allergies were causing the cough. Eventually I started smoking again because I like to smoke. I occasionally take time off of smoking just to prove to myself that I can.

9.If you could go back to when you started smoking , would you still have started?
{x} yes
{x} no
Why? “yes” in the sense of that I would probably start again in the situation I was in. Also, I enjoyed smoking, as a social construct as well as a sensual experience. “No” in the sense of that I absolutely detest the smell in my clothes, and of course the addiction and health consequences…
Are you still smoking?
{ } yes
{x} no
Why? Sometimes I would like to smoke the occasional cigarette, but I know that I’d soon be back to a full-blown addiction with all its negative consequences. So I don’t, and the benefits far outweigh the occasional yen.
Additional Comments: I think in the US quitting smoking is probably easier than here in Germany where we do not have any anti-smoking laws in effect (yet), and when you go out you’re inevitably confronted with a smoky environment.

Additional Comments:
I have smoked socially and for personal enjoyment off and on since I was 18. I’ve never tried or made an effort to quit, but depending on friends, how much I drink, my living situation, and simple lack of interest, I’ve gone without cigarettes anywhere from several weeks to a year or two. I’ve never smoked more than a few cigarettes a month, on average, and I’ve never consciously tried to quit, I just occasionally realize that I haven’t had a cigarette in six months or so.

Why? It was unhealthy, smelly, and ultimately dangerous. But when I began, I was trying to impress a girl who smoked. I didn’t end up with her, but I did end up with a twenty-four-year habit that might have killed me. I can’t think of a single benefit I ever got from smoking.

Why? I quit 22 hyears ago when I lost my voice (I was a singer). I had stopped for up to 8 weeks before, but this time I never took it up again. It was too late for my voice, though. . .singing, that is.
Additional Comments:
I had heard of all kinds of methods of quitting, including placebos (fake cigarettes that you sucked on to give the feeling that you were smoking), aversion therapy (in which you smoked continuously until the very idea of a cigarette made you sick, hypnosis, and nicotine patches. I never actually tried any of those, although I had seen many people try one or more of the methods without success. I knew the only thing that woulod work for me was cold turkey. I stopped and never started again. It took about three years for me to feel that I was actually a non-smoker, rather than a smoker who wasn’t smoking. I’m way past that now. I feel certain that if I hadn’t stopped when I did, I would have been dead by now, if not from lung cancer, then from a stroke or heart attack.

Good luck on your science project. And, please! If you haven’t started smoking yet…don’t! If you have…stop! The longer you wait the harder it gets.
