See above answer referring to my reasons not to have started in the first place.
Additional Comments:
I had quit about 8 years ago due to mild asthma attacks, but started again as soon as my asthma was under control. In October of this year, I started cutting down just because I hoped to smoke less for health reasons. With no real intention to quit altogether, cigarettes started to taste and smell bad, so one day I just stopped. My family noticed and told me they were proud of me. It’s been 3 months and the cravings are few and pass very quickly.

9.If you could go back to when you started smoking , would you still have started?
{x} yes
Why?
I started smoking only after sex. When I realized that I was smoking over a half pack a day, I became a “regular” smoker. If I could go back to the time when I was having sex that often, smoking would not be the primary thought on my mind (nor was it at the time).
Are you still smoking?
{x} no
Why?
It got too expensive. It was quit smoking or quit driving my car. Since I use the car to get to work, it won out.
Additional Comments:
It has been over 2 years since I quit smoking. I don’t think a single day has gone by that I haven’t craved a cigarette. I strongly advise against smoking to anyone that has not started. I strongly support those who do try to quit for whatever reason. However, I am greatly opposed to federal, state and local governmental regulations that are making smokers into second class citizens. I prefer to eat at a resturant that does offer a smoking section. Mainly because the smokers tend to be more relaxed, easy going and overall more friendly.

Additional Comments:
“Gradual Reduction” doesn’t work. It is just a self-defeating cop-out, used to justify not actually quitting.
I’m not convinced any of the other aids work either. Seems to me that the most important step is to really want to quit. Then, throw away your lighter, or you are not serious.

Why? I actually really liked smoking: standing around outside talking to smokers, cigarettes tasted good to me with coffee or alcohol. Most of my friends back then were smokers too - it was “cooler” back in the 90s than it is today and more acceptable in restaurants/bars, etc.
Are you still smoking?
{ } yes
{X} no
Why? My prescription for Zyban made it super easy for me to quit and it seems so gross and stinky now. All of my friends have quit as well, it’s also unaccepted almost everywhere I go.
Additional Comments:
I can’t recommend Zyban/Wellbutrin enough. I had no cravings and I lost weight at the same time, I’m sure the anti-depressant qualities of the drug also helped. My main excuse for not quitting for a long time was that I didn’t want to gain weight.

Additional Comments: I don’t know how helpfull this will be, one day i smoked a pack a day and the next all desire was simply gone. If it helps i started around 17-18 and quit at around 24, i am 28 now and while i have smoked a couple since then its always been out of curiosity and never more than a couple drags, which i found completely disgusting.

Why?
I’ve done a lot of stupid things over the years, but I value the experiences I’ve had. I hate to admit it, but smoking has given me many experiences (especially meeting other smokers) that I might not have had otherwise. I also just enjoy the experience of smoking, and I’m glad it’s something I’ve done. I am also very, VERY lucky that I don’t have a particularly difficult time quitting. The first time I quit - about four years ago now - I was over it in a few days. I started again one night when I was VERY stressed out, and have been a social smoker for the past three years - I’ll go to a party and have a few cigarettes, then not smoke for months, and it’s doesn’t bother me in the slightest.
Are you still smoking?
{ } yes
{X} no
Why?
I quit (again) just a few days ago. I will never say that I’ll never, ever have another cigarette, but I’m going to stop accepting them when friends offer them (the only time I smoke anymore.) I quit for a lot of reasons - getting older, worrying about my health, don’t want to smell like cigarettes, and so on - but mostly because I just got engaged and my finace doesn’t smoke and would rather I didn’t. I’d been looking for a good excuse, and that seemed to fit the bill.

{x} no
Why? I smoked for three years, stopped for three years, then started smoking again whilst driving across the country with a smoking friend. After smoking for 20 years (in grad school, smoking was cheaper than eating!), I quit cold turkey ten years ago.
Additional Comments:
Don’t get me wrong: there are times when I smell (fresh) cigarette smoke and think “Mmmm!”. I choose not to risk the possibility of re-addiction smoking even one.

Why? It was all a ploy to be “cool”, and it worked. I’ll trade “cool” for undamaged lungs any day, though that statement is made completely in hindsight …
Are you still smoking?
{ } yes
{x} no
Why? I started in high school to fit in with the crowd (time period was the late 70’s). I never really cared for the habit, and it was certainly physically addictive, to a degree. Later, I tended to smoke mostly in bars while drinking, a natural combo as I found out much later. Alcohol is a vasodilator, and tobacco/nicotine is a vasoconstrictor, and the two meet quite nicely in the middle. One dilates blood vessels; one constricts them. This counterbalance is (was) mutually pleasant, IMO. I’m certain some doc type will amble along here to correct this oversimplification, but it made (makes) sense to me, even now. I quit (quite easily) after realizing that my cigs were going stale. I only used them when I went out to drink, and when that phase of my youth waned, so did my tobacco usage. I quit without another thought about it, and haven’t looked back. As a side note, I hold no animosity towards current smokers, and, in fact, sympathize somewhat with them.
Additional Comments: Current smokers should be allowed to have some places (bars, restaurants, etc.) to enjoy their habit. It is a legal consumable. If the owners, employees and patrons of such establishments all agree on the inherent risks, what is the problem? Are we still the Land of the Free? Or have we become the land of the lawyers? The two questions below illustrate this point rather poignantly; I may disagree with your choices, but those choices should be yours to make, so long as they do not significantly impact others.

Additional Comments:
Trying to quit because it’ll add several years to the end of your life is just too abstract to take seriously. For me, it was better to focus on the shorter-term advantages of quitting: better stamina, better sex, not feeling like a second-class citizen, not stinking of nicotine, etc.

Why? I was in college when I quit because I was using my lunch money for cigarettes, then one day I realized how stupid that was.
Additional Comments: instead of cigarettes I would suck on lollipops all day long (those big round ones almost the size of golf balls, $.50 a piece in the school bookstore.) it gave me something to do with my hands and tasted a lot better, though I got made fun of a lot more for lollipop addiction than I ever did for smoking.
that was in the fall of 1996 and I haven’t had a cigarette, or a lollipop, since.

I’m in the process of quiting now because I’ve grown tired of craving cigarettes and the place I moved to cigarettes are $7.00 and more a pack. My quitting has nothing to do with health reasons.
