Survivor 11.16.06 "People that You Like..."

What, it’s up to the lurker to start the thread this week? Where are the astute observations and clever bons mots of my internet betters? Where are the RICH RANKINGS, or perhaps the imitation RICH RANKINGS?

I’ll have to go back and re-read the registration agreement, but I’m pretty sure I was promised astute Survivor chatter to browse on Friday mornings, after I send out my office pool updates and before I actually start working.

Anyway, I thought the last couple of weeks have been superb. Count me among those rooting for Aitu in the competitions, which made last night’s blowout wins fun instead of boring. And, three votes into the post-“mutiny” era, Candice and/or Jonathan should be gone but having them still around in a 5-tribemember Raro should be entertaining.

I hope Jonathan’s meltdown next episode lives up to the preview.

Damn. You beat me by four minutes.

I think it should be clear to the remaining players that original tribe loyalties count for a fair bit. Raro is now 4 Caucasians and 1 African American, and the last three people voted off were non-Caucasian. Do. The. Math.

Not just Raro, either. Did you see Yul’s face when he saw that Brad was gone? Sure looked like he was hoping to win Brad back over post-merge to beef their numbers.

My guess is that the merge will happen after the next TC, when there are 8 players left.

Also, I’m wondering if they really would have knocked Aitu down to 2 players if they’d lost the immunity challenge. I strongly doubt it. I’d wager that there was some sleight-of-hand involved and that there were two bottles. The Aitu bottle probably forced them to send one of their own to Exile Island or something.

Took 2 weeks off and said I didn’t miss it, but watched last night and enjoyed it. Will have to catch up a bit - no idea what happened with the “mutiny” or whatever where apparently J and C switched teams somehow.

Would have liked to hear more of Y and O’s reaction to the napparently new and expanded jury. Especially loved the stud (Adam?)'s reaction to fish boy destroying them off the bat in the swimming challenge. Outcome was pretty much determined when they had to use the folks who had sat out before.

Was there ever a previous sitaution where a losing team got piled on like yesterday - having to vote out a second person? Seemed really harsh - but I liked it. Really threw them for a loop. Felt a little sorry for the second woman voted out, but hey, no guarantees. Surprised they didn’t show the votes or final words of the first oustee.

Be assured, J’s outburst will be next to nothing, or else they would not be playing it up so big.

I’d be very happy with Yul and Ozzie in the final 2 (assuming there IS a final 2!)

Once again, the beefcake team gets plowed under by the wiry team, and Brad has to be laughing from the jury because both challenges involved puzzles (not that the Losey McLosers got to theirs, but still… puzzles). Bwah-hah-hah… I would also like to say holy crap, but Becky is a good-lookin’ woman… that shot of her running down the beach to the water…

I’m sooo glad Jenny was voted off, and in such a humiliating way. She started out as one of my favorites because on her original tribe, she was quiet and sweet and non annoying. But she’s been an absolute bitch in orchestrating the demise of some of the more likeable people. But she did so, in a way that still made her appear non-threatening to her tribemates. Considering the rest of the tribe are idiots, it was possible that she could’ve gone very far in the game.

… and now there are three ex-Raro members on the jury, and the first thought in their heads is, “You voted me off ahead of Johnathan?”

I’m thinking that Nate HAS to have finally gotten a clue – the original white tribe are solid against the others. How else could they all have voted for Jenny without a chance to consult, other than having already picked a booting order?

Rumor says the merge happens at the start of next weeks episode, yes, with the teams uneven at 5-4. Which normally would lead to a pagonging of the Aitus, but…what if Nate is sufficiently pissed at what his tribesmates did? I mean, there he sat, feeling confident he was in the inner circle. But he was sure either Candace or Jonathan would be next out…oops.

So, what if Nate decides to throw his lot in with the Aitus? He’s no worse off as #5 in that tribe, might do better because there’s at least one other of his original tribe left PLUS he can have the satisfaction of voting out the whites that backstabbed him.
Wouldn’t that be fun? The Rora’s reveling in their numerical lead…up until the first votes are counted?

Yay! I was wondering where this thread was.

Last nights Survivor was a blast. I’m very much with the Aitu’s right now: all that hugging when they win is adorable.

My favorite scenes:
-Yul, teaching us all how to deal with randy women: curl into a ball on the floor.
-Yul trying to boogy.
-The way the entire Aitu tribe actually **appreciated ** their reward and seemed to get along with their hosts. I wonder how Raro would have fared with that reward? They just seem so clueless and self involved. Blank stares and possibly rude comments?
-The accidental Yul/Ozzy kiss during one of the the Aitu’s usual cuddle piles. Hee!
-The unabashed sending of Candace to Exile Island. I don’t care if it’s rude, her skipping off to be with the ‘fun’ tribe, abandoning her alliance and then crying about it brought no sympathy. In fact…I may have laughed while she whined. (Yes, this may make me evil.)

However, these were nothing compared the great revenge that was the challenges. Aitu just keeps winning…and winning…

I wonder if Raro would have done as badly if they hadn’t kicked off Brad? He was a strong swimmer and good at puzzles. Though, from Yul’s disappointment at learning that Brad was gone – I think Brad would not have been part of the Raro block for long after any merge anyway.

The biggest horror of the show for me was the inability of the Raro tribe members to keep their pants up (And, it’s not like I’m a 60 yr. old man out on my lawn yelling at kids) – I’m glad for the pixilated boxes when their shorts start slipping, but I don’t want to know that that’s happening to Nate or Jonathan or Adam! (Though, if it were happening over at Aitu it would be another thing.)

Finishing up…well, I can’t help thinking back to Cao Boi prophetic visions of a Secret White Alliance.

The idea of people from Raro revelling about anything is kind of funny. They haven’t won many rewards, they haven’t won many immunities, they picked up two tribe members for free and still didn’t win, and then those two people are orchestrating the destruction of the rest of the tribe… Go, Raro!

Just wanted to agree with this. The people they’ve voted off have seemed very, very angry (Brad/Jenny) or sad (Rebecca). Not a good way to get votes.

Don’t feel bad. I think most of the country was with you on that.

Did anybody else see Rebecca’s final words or the vote against her? We only saw Jenny’s. Did they just not even bother to show Rebecca’s, or did our station screw up?

We are unabashedly cheering for Aitu to continue to kick Raro’s butt in the challenges. That was great, that they did it again last night! And FishBoy (or should I call Ozzy One-EyedSnakeBoy? :D) is such an amazing swimmer – he got them such a big lead in the reward challenge that even with slower swimmers behind him, they were never in any real danger.

I do hope Nate jumps ship and joins up with Aitu to pagong the White Alliance. Not much, however, will top Yul’s leading the call, “One…two…three…CANDACE!” to send her to Exile Island. Payback’s a bitch, isn’t it, honey?

Survivor has let a tribe get to one member before. In the season Tom won, Bobby Jon and what’s-her-butt had to do a fire test to see who stayed on the island and who left.

There was nothing accidental about it. I did enjoy it though.

You misunderstand me. I think the powers that be know what great TV this is, and know that everyone’s rooting for scrappy li’l Aitu. There’s no way they’d deliver them a kick in the teeth like that.

Maybe I’m in tinfoil hat territory, but it seems to me like the gimmick of the “sealed bottle” is a classic misdirection. It’s there to tell us “This decision would have applied to either team, look, they’ve got the bottle the whole time.” When, in fact, the bottle wasn’t onscreen during the whole challenge, and only reappeared after the challenge was won by Aitu. At any time, they could have easily switched bottles.

I thought that whole “here’s a bottle with a secret message you have to take back to camp but leave sealed until after the vote” was just mean. Made me especially glad that Raro was the team at tribal challenge.

I did want to roll my eyes at Jenny, a little, when she complained in her final words about not having a chance to talk things over with others and campaign against being voted off (not her exact words). Umm, sweetie? Your team’s numbers are declining, and people are starting to get nervous that if you pair up with the right other people you’ll stab them in the back.

Aside to Aitu, I’m thrilled that you are winning challenges, but tone it down a bit on the “we’re fighting against such incredible odds-- like no one on Survivor has ever done before” talk in camp, ok?

It’s hard to believe how lopsided some of these challenges have been.

I did enjoy watching the reward.

(Aside to Lil’ Mahoney Stephanie)

I’ve been thinking about this, and I’m not sure. I think the bottle was sitting out for all to see - on a brown table. Imho, I think it would have been the same for either tribe. The bottle

I’ve been looking through pictures at the main cbs survivor site, and I have to say that Aitu is a photogenic tribe!

From our friends at Television Without Pity:

Hee hee.

The secret message in the bottle was extremely anticlimactic for us Comcast customers…the description of this week’s episode was: Two tribe members are voted off.

Thanks, comcast.

Palau. Ulong, which was the suckiest bunch of sucks who ever sucked in challenges, plus Angie, who kicked some serious ass and scared more than just a little. “What’s-her-butt” was Stephenie, but I think I like your name for her better. Not a fan of hers. Anyway …

Yeah, loving the Aitus, but I have to say, what did Raro in at the Immunity Challenge last night was just plain ol’ stupidity with an added lack of strategic planning. That challenge could have been waaaaaay closer. Because, look: when you have a swimming challenge, and you have someone competing who is not so good at swimming? You do NOT let that person swim the anchor leg of a relay. The pressure of going last + lack of confidence in the water =! good results, as a general rule. Especially when said relay is “suicide” style*, where each leg is longer than the other.

Based on past performance alone, which is a metric that Raro claimed to be cognizant of at Tribal Council, Raro should have let Rebecca do the first leg of that race. She’s not a strong swimmer. Whoever was their strongest swimmer should have gone last, because (1) they would have had additional endurance to handle it, and (2) they would have been able to make up some time. While the thinking was probably, “Hey, let’s put our strongest and fastest guys in the water first so they can build up a lead,” it just doesn’t make sense when they’ve seen Ozzy swim before. Dude’s a (sea) HOSS. It’s not like he’s new or anything.

Right now I am very interested in seeing this big “deal” that Yul and Ozzy cook up next week. Those two fascinate me because they’re both great players, but in different ways. I mean, they’re both good at the physical and social aspects of the game – that tribe is tight, and not just because they’re winning. They’re winning because they’re tight. Like another Koror, only without Katie. Oh, and have I mentioned yet that Yul and Ozzy are HOTT!!!1!!1!!!? Because … yeah. I love California, and I need to move there soon.

Oh, and in closing, I would like to apologize for not being able to start the thread for the last few weeks, but I have a good excuse. Well, an excuse, anyway: we’ve had a lot of birthdays at work lately, and they all seem to be falling on Thursdays. Yesterday we took someone to Chuck E. Cheese’s for their 25th birthday and I managed to throw my back out playing Skee-Ball. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused, and hope to have the situation rectified next week. Big ups to Borborygmi for starting the thread, though. Thanks!

** = There’s probably a better term for it, but I can’t think of anything. Maybe progressive? Back when I was an athlete, many many pounds ago, and we did an individual version of last night’s challenge, we called them suicides. But I’m old. Maybe the kids are calling them something else these days.*
