Survivor 12/18 The Finale

That’s what I was thinking. I’ll have to think about exactly where to put it all, though, because that doesn’t really play a role until the very end, whereas everything else is about getting to that point. I’ll probably have to make a separate section just for the end-game ideas.

Yup.

I posted my interview with Clay this afternoon. One of the things I’d asked him was what he could have done better to swing that one more vote. His answer was that he could have responded better to Ted, but he was flabbergasted by the accusation that he just couldn’t think.

Brian (whose interview I’ll post tomorrow) said that he knew the outcome of the vote would go his way. Easy to say now.

That doesn’t surprise me with Brian, considering the way he addressed the jury questions. It was like he wasn’t even concerned about getting the win, while Clay (for the most part) was really trying to score some points. He just sort of went in there without wanting to say anything of substance, and it almost cost him the win. If I had to give a general formula for how to score points in the jury charge, it would be this:
[li]Be personally apologetic to the people you ran over to get there.[/li][li]Be flattering to the people you ran over to get there. You took them out because they would have beaten you (for your tribemates) or because they had to go if you were going to get where you are (opposing tribe members), not because you were happy or proud to get rid of them.[/li][li]What you did to get there was a function of the game, not your opponents as individuals.[/li][li]Have a consistent story about why you should get the win and the other player should not.[/li][li]No platitudes! If someone asks you why you ran them over, the answer is not because someone else worked harder than they did. Be honest to the extent that you don’t insult them or point out that you’re smarter/tougher/more popular than them.[/li]
I have been keeping up with your interviews, by the way. Nice job! The one with Clay today was especially interesting. He makes a pretty decent case that he got railroaded with the racism charge. Helen really ought to have the decency to explain that one, and Ken should do the same regarding his inexplcable question to Brian.

Thanks for the suggestions! I’ll see what I can put into the article (which I probably won’t actually write for another month or so).

Thanks! I try to ask questions that I don’t think everybody and their brother is going to ask.

Yeah, I would be pretty pissed off if I was accused of that and nobody would even have the decency to tell me what it was I was supposed to have said.

Agreed on both counts. I rather doubt Brian cares, frankly (I posted his interview early this morning and he is, um, a man of few words). Helen did explain things to an extent in her interview and Ted verified that it wasn’t like Helen came running to him with this claim. She only answered a question that came from Ted. So I doubt there were ulterior motives (especially since she was really pissed at Brian at that point), but jeez, somebody needs to explain it to the poor guy!

David B I read the recap yesterday- nicely done.

I agree that Brian’s hamfisted jury interactions nearly snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

I cannot wait to see what the new twist is going to be next Survivor. They really need to freshen up the formula quite a bit. The last 1/3 of the Season’s shows become really predictible after the merge and one team gets numbers.

Maybe do away with the merge althogether- because they never really become one tribe.

Suggestion:

Around the time the merge would have happened (or really at any time)- the teams move to the same camp (or maybe even start out that way). The challenges go from team immunity (entire team) to individual based team competition.
Tribe immunity would be given to the tribe of the individual winner. That way performance really does matter and weak I.C. players like Jan get culled early. That way a numbers challenged tribe could stay in with wins in the I.C.'s. When all of the other tribe is gone, the first 2 finishers get immunity.

This would return the show back to Survival of the Fittest, rather then the somewhat boring at times march to tribal council a tribe down one player can expect. Also, the effect of alliances would be scaled back when 2 players get immunity.

The solid month of boring shows, as well as being able to spot the winner 6 weeks from the finish would be eliminated or greatly reduced. And the drama and importance of the I.C.'s restored.

Wow, Brian’s interview is pretty lame.

Hey, thanks for that insight, Brian.

Ah well, the guy may be a jerk in real life, but I still can’t begrudge him the win. I was cheering for him like I was cheering for Kathy in Marquesas. You’d just think an actor would be a little more P.R.-conscious. That’s the second interview I’ve seen with him where he basically grunted his answers.

Thanks!

I think most minds were made up before they got there. Helen was on the fence because she wanted an apology and almost didn’t get one. Other than that, I suspect not much changed due to the jury discussions. I mean, look at Ken – he ripped into Clay for saying any of them would have lied like he did to get to that point, and then he went and voted for Clay anyway!

Agreed. I hope it’s a good one (not like the “who wants to switch tribes?” one we had this time).

Well, in Marquesas they did a good job, but that was more because the Rotu Four were so stupid.

You’ll get little argument here. I asked the CBS rep if I could send follow-up questions, and she said I could but that’s the way he always responds. So I didn’t bother.

Agreed completely, though I compare him more to (in case I haven’t made that totally obvious about a million times now) Rich Hatch. Everybody I knew who watched the first series hated him. I thought he deserved to win more than anybody else, and I was thrilled when he did! Same with Brian.

Well, I was gonna make a comment about the movies he’s been in and grunting, but…

I guess he doesn’t feel he necessarily needs to be P.R.-conscious. He has to do the interviews because it’s part of the deal with CBS I would guess, but he doesn’t have to be verbose. He has his million and probably wants nothing to do with the media – especially websites. That’s his choice.

I set 'em up, you knock 'em out of the park.

Did you see the comment Helen made to him about his “It’s been a pleasure” statement in the finale (she mentioned it in the interview I did with her). She said they were watching this in the green room and she turned to him and said something like, “Hey, wasn’t that one of the movies you were in?”
