Do you mind giving a quote of his that you’re paraphrasing there?
Exactly my point, but you said it much better than I did.
There has been a long-running problem with (often affluent) white gay men trying to control the messaging for the entire LGBT community, and Varner’s “hey I support trans rights in North Carolina, so I don’t accuse me of being insensitive when outing a transgender person against their will” (paraphrased heavily) sounds like more of the same. It might not be, but it’s the sort of thing I’ve heard numerous times before.
Obligated? No. But it’d be bad PR.
The thing is that they’d have to edit out EVERYTHING the contestants said about it for the remainder of the season. I don’t think they could instruct them not to talk about it, that would run afoul of the game show laws they have to follow.
Now Zeke could ask them to never bring it up again during filming, since he’s a fellow contestant, but the second the producers said “Don’t ever mention the Varner incident or Zeke’s sexuality for the remainder of the show”, they’d be violating the law.
I haven’t read everyones comments yet, but I do know on good authority that Varner is under suicide watch. He has been getting death threats since the episode aired and he has lost his job as well.
Well, it was a shitty thing to do, but I don’t hate Varner to the degree that I hated other people on the show. Zeke may not have been out to the entire world as transgender, but (assuming he hasn’t lived under a rock his whole life) there’s really no way to transition from one gender to another without lots of people knowing…family (of course), friends, co-workers, classmates.
And I think that it’s a tad ironic that Zeke kept impressing upon everyone that he didn’t want to be known as the trans Survivor, but instead as Zeke the Survivor…and then they devoted nearly a whole show to making a huge ordeal about it. I’d actually have had more respect for the show had they spent 3 minutes on it and then moved on…because his gender is irrelevant.
And, I absolutely agree that there should have been a vote.
No, they spent the usual time they spend on Tribal Council.
He said in an interview that the show had given both him and Zeke therapy.
I thought the same, you know, was he living under a rock?
Damn it. Bricker seems to agree somewhat.
I’m gonna go take a long walk and see if I can figure out where my life took a wrong turn. But I’d like to take back my post now. ![]()
I also agree there is no way Jeff could have known what Varner was going to say… even IF he knew Varner knew and there is no evidence Jeff did.
And of course they are trying to add drama to the show (regarding the no vote). It’s supposed to be entertaining.
Too much $$ at stake. What will be interesting is to see how this plays out in the rest of the game. Theoretically, it could never come up again and the folks on the other tribe never know until they get voted out or the filming is over.
Will Zeke ask his fellow tribe mates to not mention it? Will he make some general announcement at the merge to get it out and over with?
Two hour Survivor episode tonight.
IMO, we haven’t heard the last of this issue. If this continues to be a talking point for Zeke this season (maybe in the Final Tribal Council), CBS had to televised the “Outing”.
You mean, Varner had no idea that his statement might be televised?!?
:dubious:
He said that he moved away from family and friends when he started to transition. And made new friends and had new coworkers. I’m sure his close family knew, but don’t we all have distant relatives we never talk to?
I’m very much looking forward to tonight’s episode.
I have lots of distant relatives we never talk to. If I found out one of them had transitioned to a different species my entire reaction would be ‘huh.’
Oh good, nobody seems to care about Zeke’s past, and it’s back to normal tonight. Which is nice.
Moving right along, can someone remind me how Sarah and Hali are game changers? I don’t see where Zeke is either but I don’t want to get back into the above discussion. I remember seeing them before but don’t recall anything that would put them in a class with Sirie, Sandra, Ozzy, etc.
Interesting how the game can quickly shift from everyone wanting to make an ‘easy’ vote (deciding between Hali and Michaela, both on the very bottom) to suddenly taking out Ozzy. Just how the game works these days.
Edgic (edit-based logic) comment:
So Sarah’s pretty much got this in the bag, right? Every episode they go to pains to give her the chance to talk, and often about her strategy, even when she seems to be playing a game pretty much as invisible as Aubry or Troyzan. They even let her talk about the Zeke thing before Zeke did!
I can’t believe the next episode after Zeke was outed as transgender, he commented that he didn’t want to get caught with his pants down! LOL
