A lot of people on these boards have had real survivor experiences. I’m thinking of the members of the military who are trained in it, have gone through SERE school, etc. I’d like to avoid the subject of illness survivors, survivors of domestic abuse, survivors of childhood, and so forth. What I’m interested in are real-life emergency survival experiences.
So… realizing that some here have already had actual experiences, here’s a question: Would you, gentle poster, willingly submit yourself to actual survival training, in which you are “put to the test” for, say, two weeks? That is, if there were a “survival camp” where you could spend your vacation, where you could learn basic survival skills and put them to a practical test, would you do it? No cameras. No prizes. Just you and your team.
Personally, it’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. I’ve often wondered if there are such places?
There are, but the problem is they are not cheap, which has stopped me from doing it. I would like to do the “Survivor” thing as I would feel that spending a month on that island was pay enuf ( altho I might want some $ to cover loss of pay, I guess). Outward Bound used to do that sort of stuff, but they have gotten more into “inner survival” and “retraining troubled inner-city youth” sorta thing. But your local college might actaully HAVE a “survival” class, or maybe edible plants. I took 2 edible plant courses out of Santa Monica, and 2 survival courses from UCLA ext. Take a course, read all the books, and do your own survivor thing. A buddy and I did it on catalina, but only for 3days/ 2nites.
Since it wouldn’t be real, boot camp might be fun too.
If someone else is paying for me to be there, sign me up!
Particularly if it’s somewhere where the scenery is stunning, but even if it’s not. If you can find water to boil, the worst that can happen, in the two weeks on your own, is that you lose some weight. And if you’re somewhere where the fishing is decent, it could be the perfect camping trip, other than the absence of beer.
