Rob begrudgingly said he was sorry if he insulted Tom’s family. Such a contingent apology is worthless, since it refuses to accept responsibility for whatever one is apologizing for. And it’s not like there’s any question that Rob did insult Big Tom’s dumbass son, since he was speaking right to the camera at the time.
Did anyone else catch Amber rolling her eyes at Kathy during the reunion, by the way? I thought that was pretty awful too.
That wouldn’t be my definition of a script. My definition would be those stapled pages telling people what to say and act. But I admit again, the acusation of scripting is a strong term which I did not intend to support. My original comments were supporting the idea that these “reality” games are “fake”. Scripting is a defined method of faking something but you can fake “reality” by suggesting to these hams on the show that fighting, overeacting, or just plain bizaare behavior is interesting.
On a 50’s style game show, the producer or his agent serves as both the referee and judge. On “Survivor” the producer’s agents are only referees. They have some limited power in determining who stays but it is the contestants themselves who eliminate players. The producers could claim that, since they did not select the rejections, they did not fix the results.
I agree with your comments about editing.
Yeah, but broadcasting 30 minutes (1 hour minus commercials minus challenges and council) out of every 72 hours is going to allow you to get some pretty choice moments with 18 people both competing around the clock for a massive amount of money as well as trying to form a cohesive, primitive living environment. Even then, you get shows near the end of the competition where everyone just says, “camp is really boring, and I still hate Jenna”.
The best part of Survivor is that these people go through 39 days of bullshit to win a million dollars while CBS probably make that off two commercials. Most of the prizes are advertisements which means its most likely either free or CBS gets paid to give it away on national TV. Oh wait, they are giving away a second million. The first set of commericals during the reunion show more than paid for it.
Oh well, I still love the show and plan on watching it until it goes off the air.
I hope next season is in Afghanistan. Lets see them bitches try to really survive, especially when they have to run across a minefield for immunity.
Munch: To speak truthfully, I’ve never seen one episode of Survivor. Using the internet, I could probably find a cite (or site) that proves you were never born; but that doesn’t mean it is true. I merely rationalized there is at least a small amount of "un"realism because a) all reality shows are fundamentally scripted: they don’t bring cameras to an island and hope to find 18 strangers willing to compete for cash; and b) the participants write their own scripts: overdramatizing for the cameras, getting the most of their 15 seconds. We all would do that. And I think the producers know this and actually rely on it.
But you are correct: it is way different with RW, RR et. al. With these shows, the focus is over-dramatization…who wants to see 6 months of 5 low-20 somethings sit around a beach house watching television? (that would be real reality t.v.) It may not happen in shows like Survivor, like you say; but people do metamorphize when cameras are near. The camera forces different personalities upon the participants. Perhaps, that is real. But it is in no way akin to wrestling, etc., I must say.
