Thank you CelticCowboy. I too am quite concerned at her cavalier attitude about firearms. I admit to owning and carrying (at times) a gun, but there is no excuse for anyone to glorify violence for the sake of violence.

Thank God I’ve never had to shoot someone, but if I’d had a gun at the time it wouldn’t have done any good. My dad was in Vietnam. I’ve got a friend who is a cop, and many more in the miliary. I can tell you that when the shit hits the fan your aim ain’t gonna be worth a shit. period.
I appreciate that you’ve bothered to school yourself in such statistics, but you’ve got to realize that a gun only increases your chances of self defense. Even with martial arts training or other self-defense techniques you’re not totally safe. You never are. You never will be.
While it’s true that you do stand a hell of a better chance with a gun in some situations than without, I don’t think you fully understand that your fear is only making you more vulnerable.
You’re hiding behind these statistics rather than facing the truth that you feel threatened. I’m not sure if a gun is really the answer for you. From the two threads listed in the OP it sounds to me like you’ve got some serious issues concerning men, and they sound quite unhealthy.
Susanann, is one of those militia types who believe the Federal Government has become oppresive and people need to go around armed to the teeth in case they have to repel a foreign invasion or the oppresive Federal Government. It is just plain clear to her that having a bunch of rednecks armed and going around in search of illegal aliens is a good idea. No need to explain why or to address the objections of the other posters.
In a thread about the state of the US economy she does pretty much the same: a drive by where she foams at the mouth incoherently about how the USA is going to hell in a handbasket. Her take on unemployment:

And so we come to a thread discussing whether America can be called the land of the free. Again she spouts her views about how tirannical and oppresive the US government is. There she says pretty much that America has the highest taxes, the highest number of laws, the greatest number of lawyers and that it is going to hell in a handbasket.
So I explain to her that absolute numbers mean nothing and it is what each person pays to the government as a percentage of what they produce which counts. I post link showing income tax rates in the US are generally lower than in other advanced countries. amarone posts:

In the same thread she claims there are “too many laws and too many lawyers” in the US. What there are in the US is too many idiots. That’s for sure.
She’s like the religious zealots we get from time to time. They repeat the formulas they’ve heard but are completely incapable of reasoning or changing their mind on anything. I believe pigheaded is the technical term.
With all due respect, the possibility that somebody could sneak up on your unaware does not invalidate the wisdom of carrying implements of self defense.
Oh, I know. That’s why I carry. But Susanann’s assertion that:

Whether you have a gun or not, no one would let themselves be raped, and if you do have a gun, that does not guarantee you will not be violated.
Did you see her response to Gaudere’s chastisement? Quite clearly to her, the ends justify the means. And her restatement of the policy she intends to follow does not correspond to the Board’s rules, which she also essentially admits not having read.
I believe I have found at one time some “official” government stats that did show that armed women were much, much less likely to ever be raped.
However, if this is assumed to be true, having the gun doesn’t have to affect the equation any. I believe the article came down to this conclusion: since a woman who choses to buck the sociological stigma of having and carrying a gun (and the deluge of mass media telling her that her gun will only kill her and thousands of innocent blue-eyed children as soon as she touches it…and yes, I’m being hyperbolic) is likely either to:
be much, much, much more fearful and aware of the potential of being raped, and thus takes numerous precautions against having that happen. She rarely goes to dark places alone. Parks under a light. Walks with someone rather than alone. Is always looking around, aware of her surroundings. Hell, they say that even the way you walk and hold your head sends signals to a rapist: cautious walk, head down means “I am timid, and won’t fight.” Strong, fast walk, head up, looking around, means “I am not timid, I will fight back.”
or to simply avoid any and all potential situations altogether. Hide out at home, only go to work and the store when needed.
