Sweden?

My SO just got a gig that takes her to Stockholm for 2 weeks then someplace way south of that for another week, not sure yet which city.

She leaves on Sunday, any advice to give her on what to do if she gets any spare time?

We’ve traveled a lot but never to Sweden, surely we have some members from that part of the world.

The Vasa museum is pretty cool if she’s into history, granted the ship itself might have seen better days but on the other hand it is almost 400 years old.

Reported for forum change.

Moved to IMHO.

Vasa? Sounds like it would be right up her alley.

Second the Vasa museum.

Also take a boat tour out into the archipelago. There are plenty that are aimed towards sightseeing.

Walk around Gamla Stan (old town, buildings from the 1600’s). The Royal Palace is there and parts of it are open to the public.

Plenty of stuff to do and see this time of the year. It gets pretty grey and dark in the winter, but May-August it’s quite pretty.

Also several art museums if she’s into that.

The Vasamuseet is definitely among the best on the planet - it would be a mistake to travel to Stockholm without seeing this.

Strange and unusual foods … I know that game is available in Norway and Sweden, and different kinds of snacks, based on dried fish =)

Smörgåsbord!!! There is more to Swedish cooking other than the stuff in the cafeteria at IKEA!

We loved the Vasa museum, also Skansen, when we went to Stockholm. I’m hoping to one day take my kid to Skansen.

Dried fish? During my 33 years as a Swede I don’t think I’ve ever eaten (or seen) dried fish snacks…
As for things to do, I’ll second the archipelago boat ride. At least if the weather is good.

Boat trip thirded, preferably with Waxholmsbolaget which you can find by the Grand hotel, sort of opposite the royal palace. I’d suggest you take a boat to Vaxholm, stroll around there for a while and then take a bus back to town.

Just a wee word of warning about public transport in Stockholm. It’s usually quite good, both buses and underground, but getting a ticket can be tricky (for security reasons the local transport authority have more or less phased out all handling of money), so I suggest you check out this page first.

Yeah. More of an Icelandic thing, isn’t it?

I whatever the Vasa, was an amazing experience, and Gamla Stan is good too (although if you’ve seen a lot of European old towns this is a bit more of the same and clearly aimed at tourists). If you’ve go the time I recommend taking the train to Uppsala which is about 40 minutes north of Stockholm and have a wander around. It’s an extremely pretty town especially in summer, I was there for a month last year and fell in love with the place. Go to Cafe Linaeus on Svartbäcksgatan near Linaeus garden, they do the BEST cakes

If you go to the Old Town, do your best to avoid Västerlånggatan, which is one gigantic tourist trap and stroll around in the little alleyways in the centre of the island instead.

If you have access to a car and a free day a visit to where all the crystal/ glass companies is worth the trip.
Orefors, Kosta Boda and many others I can’t recall the names of, all reside in a geographically small area (glasbruk?). They all have museums with amazing examples of their art.
I’ve gone there a couple of times and enjoyed the outing.

+1 for Vasa and Gamla stan / Old town. Also, the Nobel Museum there was fairly interesting.

If she does go to Uppsala, the Museum Gustavianum has some cool stuff, I especially like the Augsburg Art Cabinet. On Saturdays and Sundays they have guided tour (1pm in English).

I’ll bet you could have a real blast there.

Just watched The Millenium Trilogy (Gilr w/ the Dragon Tatoo)…Stockholm looks very cool. Have fun!

Stockholm is a very beautiful town in my opinion and just now it’s peaking with all the new foliage. Visitors are often amazed at how green it is compared to other big cities. One other nice thing is how it opens up to embrace the water, the sea on one side of the Old Town and lake Mälaren on the other. Here’s a map where I have marked a couple of good viewpoints overlooking the water.
