Switching gmail settings

I have two main gmail accounts, my SDMB mod account and my (freelance) work account. I prefer to keep them separate and not have one feed into the other because they’re both extremely active but completely different from each other.

Right now, the mod account has thisin the upper right-hand corner, and my work account has this. I prefer the stripped down version of the latter, but can’t figure out what the settings are to change to make my mod account like that as well.

Any ideas?

TIA.

It’s entirely possible there might not be a way. Google tends to change stuff whenever they feel like, roll it out to some people (accounts) earlier than others, and not give any good way to opt in or out.

Not saying that’s the case here, but if your accounts used to look the same and one just recently changed, it’s a possibility.

Looks to me like the mod version is linked to Google+, and the work version isn’t. No idea how to de-link it, though.

Yes, three of the icons in the mod version are for Google+, which I don’t use and don’t intend to use, and the icon to click on to sign out is now the little profile icon, which is unintuitive and annoying as well as undersized.

Effin’ Google.

Many of their “improvements” come with an explanation and a “no, take me back to the old way” option – I didn’t remember seeing one for this, and was hoping I’d just missed it and could switch back.

Thanks anyway, guys.

You can actually delete your Google+ account. Try at https://plus.google.com/u/0/downgrade/
They warn SCARY THINGS if you downgrade (more like: please! don’t go!), so I haven’t tried. I foolishly clicked on some change your name thing in YouTube and now everything is Google+. The Google+ interface is SO much slower than Picasa Web Album’s; fortunately I can revert to the old interface for now.

I mean, if you’re only using the account for email, you probably won’t lose anything by downgrading.

Hm, that might work. I’ve never used Google+ and don’t plan to … but I do do some social media for clients, so may not want to burn any bridges. Wonder if undoing it on the mod account, which is where the problem is, would cut me off via other accesses later?

As I understand it, you can always rejoin later. Other than Google+ itself, what you lose are YouTube comments, and maybe playlists. But if you have anything important to lose, you’d better make sure first.

I just bit the bullet and deleted Google+ (NOT my entire Google profile!), per AaronX’s link. Read through the scary list of all the features I’d lose, didn’t see a single thing I ever used or would miss.

Result- completely painless, and I believe the results you are looking for.

Cool! Thanks for being the guinea pig on that, Twoflower – I followed your lead and am delighted to see that the crap that was pissing me off is now gone from that line of the page.

Yay! thanks AaronX – once again the Dope knows!

Assuming you use your non-SDMB email with your clients, I’d suggest using Google+ there instead of on your SDMB account, if you ever find you need a Google+ account.

Personally, I also wouldn’t use your real name on your SDMB mod account, just in case. And do not click on any option to link your two accounts in any way. This consolidation thing rubs me the wrong way, making me much more suspicious of Google than I have been in the past. You should not have been able to sign up for Google+ on your SDMB account without knowing it.
