Swords: Warmed over Leftovers?

Discovery Channel now runs “Swords”, which is about swordfish fishing in the Grand Banks.

The style is just like Deadliest Catch.

What do you guys think? I looked at some of those fisherman, and they wouldn’t last 2 minutes on the Bering Sea. I’m in about three episodes and if someone does get eaten by a shark or get speared, I’m not watching any more.

What’s next, Lobstermen? Rockfishers? Abalonians? Ahi?

They already did lobstermen. They concentrated a lot more on the aspect of lots of boats trying to fish a small area, and boats that thought they were entitled to the prime grounds, than the actual danger.

They must think because of the success of Deadliest Catch that the viewers are clamoring for ever more shows about fishing. Doesn’t matter fishing for anything in particular, just fishing!

Aren’t swordfish, along with many other species, in decline? I haven’t watched but do the fisherman have a strict limit of how many they can catch?

It does seem like a lame copy of Deadliest Catch. I guess ratings will determine if it’s back or not.

I can’t tell. I know that it costs about 20-50K in fuel and food costs, and that swords are about $5-6 per pound. And you have to pay your crew.

They were landing some 100 and 200 pounders last night.

So some quick math says you need about $10000 pounds to break even (no salaries).

The only cool thing last night was watching the line get tangled, creating a potential backlash effect where someone could have gotten hurt.

No one did. Darnit. I wish that guy Chompers would get eaten by a shark, but I hear that those type of sharks aren’t cannibals.

Swords is like Deadliest Catch because the same person produces them both, Thom Beers. He also produced Lobstermen as well as Ice Road Truckers, Ax Men, Black Gold, Verminators, Iditarod and many, many other shows in a similar vein. He keeps making them, the networks keep buying them. More power to him.

So he is the Tom Clancy of the tube?

Damn!

Why can’t they do a show called “Geeks”?

Wait, it was called Office Space
