"The Deadliest Catch" has run its course

What was at first a great and fascinating show has finally become tedious and repetitive. I deleted it from my TIVO list last night. Not because it has suffered in quality, but because all the storylines have played out.

Men dump pots. Men retrieve pots. Sometimes they catch lots of crab, sometimes they don’t. Men work long hours, some get hurt, and the Captains yell a lot at the greenhorns, some of whom melt down. The weather gets bad.

They are now having to invent drama to keep things moving - (Captain’s kid spends his Dad’s money on a flat screen TV and spends a day mounting it near his bunk.)

I found myself laughing last night when the Captain in Halloween costume missed his jump and fell in between the ship and the dock. He could have been killed. I remembered that the last real drama was when a guy was rescued after getting knocked off by a wave.

I don’t want to be entertained by people dying. I’ll join the Celebrity Death Pool instead.

The fact that the derby style fishing is over hurts the drama factor. Who wants to watch fishermen catch cod for 3 months?

The cat at work was entertained by it for a few moments. Perhaps it would do best as 3 minutes shorts?

It was hilarious, I was doing paper work in the lounge and the clinic cat came in, I had just turned on Deadliest Catch having never seen it before. When they showed them dumping crabs out of the traps the cat ran up and watched intently and he kept checking the cabinet under the tv to see if any of the crabs had fallen in there. He tried to grab some of the ones on the tv, then they showed people talking again and he got bored. But he was really entertained for about 3 minutes.

But you’ve gotta admit that the close up view of the greenhorn puncturing his smashed fingernail with a hot needle to let off the pressure - was awesome!

I agree that Deadliest Catch has lost its appeal. I don’t even think Derby fishing would make it significantly more interesting.

I will say that Deadliest Catch is immensely better than the Lobster Wars rip-off. Watching Deadliest Catch makes me crave King Crab. Lobster Wars makes me never want to eat lobster again.

I was a fanatic fan of “Deadliest Catch,” so it really hurts me to say that I do completely agree with you.

I can’t pinpoint that “Jump the Shark” moment, but if I’d had any doubt that it has occurred, it was rammed home to me the last few weeks when the Discovery Channel started showing flashbacks, repeats of Season 1, Season 2, etc., etc., etc., (continue for however long it takes to get you nauseous), out takes of DC, DC and Amazon Women on the Moon, DC meats Star Wars…

Sad, I really liked that show.

Yeah, I’m over it too.

I haven’t even tuned it this season.

Still, I expect it’s just more of the same, and if no one has ever watched DC before. . .it’s a must that you watch it for at least one full season.

You should watch the porn version…The Deadliest Snatch.

Much better than Lobster Whores.

Well, that puts a whole new spin on the term “Baiting The Pot.”

. . .and King Crabs.

Y’know, I had just completely erased that image from my mind. And there you go, putting it right back in there.

This show is right up there with “American Chopper”, “Trading Spaces”, “Survivor”, and a litany of other reality shows that I used to clamor for and whose concepts haven’t changed, but I just lost interest. What was once fresh, has become just rehashed. I don’t blame the shows, it’s just that the premises have a shelf life.
I still love “The Amazing Race” for some reason and I don’t think that’ll change.

Maybe they could film episodes on the inside of the boat: showing the cook developing new recipes, trying to see how many vegetables he can sneak into each meal, etc. Or, you could have a messiest quarters show and make the loser pick up everyone’s room, or have an entire episode set entirely in the engine room where everyone watches all of the filters get changed and new fluids added. There’s a whole season’s worth of episodes with what I just came up with. You people just aren’t trying hard enough!
