SXSW lineup: tell me about these bands

No, Peaches is not part of Chicks on Speed, although she did have a guest appearance on “We Don’t Play Guitars.”

I’ve since checked out The Arctic Monkeys and The Hellacopters. I think both would be great live.

By the way, Pitchfork says today that the Arctic Monkeys show will be on the 17th, with Test Icicles, The Beautiful New Born Children, and the Archie Bronson Outfit.

Annie does classy, chilly, electropop, but she’s also branched into remixes.

Clor are an electroclash/indie group. Think of a cross between Franz Ferdinand and Fischerspooner. A bit inconsistent, but when they get it right - like the single Love + Pain - they’re very good.

Death In Vegas churn out gritty, downbeat dark electronic instrumentals - fuzzy guitars and the like. You may have heard the song Girls on the “Lost In Translation” soundstrack, or the song Dirge in a Levi advert a few years back.

The Duke Spirit go for more straightforward indie-rock. The lead singer, Liela Moss, has a husky, filthy style and an awesome stage presence.

The Editors, KT Tunstall, The Magic Numbers and Lady Sovereign are unaccountably overrated.

I thought Peaches was Canadian. Not impressed; look-at-me-I-can-swear art rock and electroclash. The odd decent tune but nothing consistent.

I can totally hear it. There’s a chord change in one of their songs that is exactly like “Time”, right down to the way the chord is phrased on piano.

You’re absolutely right. You did a much better job of describing her than I did. That’s why I don’t write music reviews anymore.

I’m rather a fan of Flogging Molly. Celtic punk, obvious Pogues influence.

The BellRays (Los Angeles CA) - Imagine if Aretha Franklin had fronted, let’s say, The Stooges
Neko Case (Tacoma WA) - The next Loretta Lynn or maybe Patsy Cline.
Cat Power (Atlanta GA) - Very fragile indie pop. Her shows can sometimes be gong shows if she starts crying
Echo & The Bunnymen (Liverpool UK) - One of the better 80’s synthpop bands making a good comeback
The Go! Team (Brighton UK) - Very entertaining spazz pop
The Hellacopters (Stockholm SWEDEN) - A convincing arguement that the Swedes invented Rock ‘n’ Roll
k-os (Whitby ON) - King of Canadian hip-hop, which actually makes him pretty good
Peaches (Berlin GERMANY) - Smutty hip-hop girl you wouldn’t take home to mother… but maybe to father
The Plimsouls (Los Angeles CA) - Old school New Wave band… their highlight was appearing in the movie Valley Girl
Robert Pollard (Dayton OH) - Former front man of Guided By Voices… which kinda makes him one of the Godfathers of indie-rock
Ramblin’ Jack Elliot (New York NY) - He’s been around forever and he wrote the very first song… but Dylan got all the credit
If everything works out, I’m planning on being there too.

Bumped because the list was crazy updated today. (Way too many to post here.)

I’m especially excited about:
Animal Collective (even though Feels hasn’t quite grabbed me yet)
The Apples in Stereo (even though they don’t quite shine live like they do on their studio work)
Rhett Miller (probably my favorite songwriter not named Lucinda)
Ladytron (loved their album last year)
The New Pornographers (there they are!)
Old Crow Medicine Show (I’m a sucker for the Americana)
Lucero (if you haven’t heard them, they sit at the point where Uncle Tupelo split into Wilco and Son Volt, which is a great place to sit)
Ted Leo

and more others than I can name. I’m intrigued by Susanna Hoffs and Matthew Sweet (together); Susanna (aka the head Bangle) may well have been one of my first crushes, and I was a fan of Sweet in college.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre? Didn’t I just see a great documentary about how they spectacularly collapsed?

I’m getting sensory overload just reading the damn list. And it’s still just a partial list.

Incidentally, I picked up The Magic Numbers’ CD over the weekend, and I’m digging it–it’s very happy, and that works for me right now. My eMusic downloads renew today, so I’ll be trying to scout out a bunch more.

Bumping my thread because the list has been updated even more. The big news is that Morrissey has been added to the list. So have the Flaming Lips, the Charlatans UK, and a metric shitload of other bands.

I would go to this festival just to see The Gathering. The fact that there are a ton of other great bands and artists playing would be just icing on the cake for me.
