For a couple of years, using Win 98, had absolutely no trouble syncing my Toshiba PDA and making backups.
When I created or modified a Lotus Wordpro document, I also saved it as a Word .doc program in a folder created when I installed Activsync, in a final folder called \Personal.
Since moving to Win XP, nothing seems to work right. There are several identical \Personal folders in seveal places both in the C: drive and in My Documents, all seeing to have the same files.
Yet when I sync, keep getting errors that can find no way of resolving. My Contacts sync just fine, but never can get wordprocessing docs to go over to the PDA.
Have tried all the different Options, but nothing works. I’ve Saved the same document as a .doc file in each of the many Personal folders, but they never get to the PDA.
This is a major headache. I even uninstalled and re-installed Activesync but it made no difference.
I can’t understand why XP does not have just one folder for these files, where I can save them, and then move to the device as it did so easily in Win 98. Too simple, I guess.
Umm… I’ve done activesync with several winXP machines, never had a much of a problem like that. Activesync can create multiple sync-documents folders inside ‘my documents’ when you have wiped your PDA and started all over again, but it’s still only using one at a time, for a given activesync profile. You should be able to find the right folder by clicking on ‘files’ in the activesync window.
A folder that’s in the C drive and outside of ‘my documents’ should never be syncing with a pocketPC, as far as I’m aware of.
the only other thing that I can think of is trying to make sure that your capitalization of the folder name, ‘Personal’ or ‘personal’ or ‘PERSONAL’ or whatever, matches on both PC and device, and that neither are by any mischance duplicated. pocketPC considers capitalization important, but will not directly let you rename a folder to a different capitalization sequence, so you have to rename it to something entirely different and then back.
Sorry for all the troubles you’re having. Hope you can get it sorted out.
Did you move to a new machine with Windows XP, or did you upgrade the OS on your current machine?
I own one of the first iPaqs Compaq produced; it syncs fine with XP. When I upgraded the OS on my old machine, I reinstalled ActiveSync (upgraded to the latest release, actually) and created a new profile for my iPaq. If more than one profile exists – if the PDA is set to synchroize with more than one machine, for some reason – it won’t synchronize files properly. An extra profile can easily be created by accident during an OS upgrade.
Interesting thought. I got a brand new computer with XP when my W98 box died.
As I recall, I first installed Activesync 3.8, then hooked up the PDA. It started the sync and as mentioned, my Contacts went fine, but the Files sync went haywire. It kept going and going, saying something like “Syncing x out of x files” over and over.
When I hit Stop, message said something like “X files not synced.” When I hit Resolve, nothing.
Ah well, think will try a total reinstall again. Maybe use ver 3.7?
