I just tried to call a colleague and had the oddest experience. There was no ringing, no going straight to voicemail, no message that this number is no longer in service, etc. Instead the phone stayed silent. I then hopped onto Facebook and see that T-mobile’s network is down. Is this what is happening to someone trying to call a T-mobile phone right now?
US wide problems according to CNN:
In our house we have Cricket, whatever Safelink (Tracfone?) uses, and AT&T. None were working most of the day. Facebook messenger was out too.
We had to spend the entire day yelling at each other from across the hall instead of messaging. What a nightmare!
I was able to receive texts at some point early in the day because I had a doctor appt. message I was supposed to reply to confirm the appointment but I never could get it sent.
My sister up in the far left corner of Washington State is without service.
We’re T-Mobile subscribers near Atlanta, and noticed the problem around 3:30 or so on Monday afternoon. First there was no connection to the cell network, then after about 30 minutes the signal came back, but we still couldn’t send or receive texts or calls. Texts came in hours after they were sent, some didn’t go through all, and most incoming and outgoing calls don’t connect: no ringing, no voicemail, no error message. Wifi calling didn’t seem to work either, for some reason.
[smug] However, because we have a landline, I was able to make calls to test the cell phones, and could have made any necessary critical calls. [/smug]
As I write, at about 11:30 pm, 10 hours after it started, things are still not back to normal. I hope the techs can get things straightened out by tomorrow morning.
Distributed Denial of Service attack, per many sources, possibly from China. I don’t know how to post links on my tablet, but if you Google with the filter set to today it will come up. Just the latest in the list of plagues

it wasn’t just t-mobile spectrum landlines was also having problems from about 3-pm til about 9 pm also …
Has anyone reflected that everything, EVERYthing, is hanging by a thread?
The DDOS thing was just a rumor. In actuality T-Mobile screwed up an update so bad that the result looked like one when they not only took themselves down but other services as collateral damage.
I had zero problems with Verizon. I heard there were problems at work with the mobile terminals. They have Verizon air cards but I don’t know about the systems they need to link up to. I was off today so I don’t know how bad it was.
At the end of that article is a tweet from someone named Brian Krebs (no idea who he is) that said “related to a wonky update in the systems”. Good to know the professionals are all over it.
they say it’s fixed now
Thank you !

My mother- and sister-in-law are on a family plan with T-Mobile and both were without voice or text service on their cell phones yesterday. Haven’t checked with Mrs. ToKnow to see if things are fixed for them today. Oddly, my mother-in-law’s home phone was misbehaving as well, which should not have been related.
Thank you !

We are on Verizon out in the middle of nowhere, and all of a sudden Mr VOW’s phone just…quit.
I was still able to text…sort of.
And our HughesNet was wonky all day.
The Daughter-in-law informed us she had gotten word that all carriers were down. She works logistics for a major trucking firm, and cell service is her LIFE.
I think we’ll go buy some more toilet paper.

T-Mobile MVNO (Mint).
I have not tried making calls. Data worked fine. The only issue is that text messages aren’t going through on SMS, but I can text over wifi. Have not tried yet today.
Many years ago (20? 30?), someone (not me! I was on a plane!) put a badly tested/untested change into the AT&T 4E network (the big ass switches that at the time ran basically all long distance) that took down the network for multiple hours.
Rumor had it that the employee responsible didn’t even bother coming back in - just mailed their badge back to their supervisor.
This exact same thing happened to me yesterday around the same time. I have Verizon, colleague has T-Mobile. We were texting back and forth with no problem and then she asked me to call her. I tried, but like you said, it was just totally silent and then about 20 seconds later I got beeps and Call Failed. But then I texted her to say it wasn’t going through and could she try calling me instead, and she was able to do that. The audio quality was appreciably worse than normal, though.
At the time I thought it was a problem with my phone. But I guess it was her carrier.
