Take the guns first... Due process second

This proposal to deal with individuals with red flags that they may commit gun violence came not from Obama, Hilary or any of the usual gun-grabber suspects, but from… Donald Trump?

Yes, that is right. It came during today’s meeting with lawmakers on gun safety legislation:

So, will the GOP let him do it? Will the NRA? Or will he walk it back tomorrow like immigration reform last month?

It’ll get walked back. If I was a gambler I’d put money on it. There will be a “clarification” on what Trump really meant.

Wait, wait…I smell an EO to ATFE…followed by a Supreme Court case halting it, assuming it wasn’t an automatic winner lower down.

That’s not very 2A, is it?

Trump is an equal opportunity imbecile, regardless of political affiliation. On the upside, he’s setting himself to be a better salesperson for gun manufacturers than Obama (unwittingly) was. On the downside, any executive order directing unlegislated confiscation of fireams is going to be subjected to so many legal challenges that the already understaffed federal judiciary is going to be backlogged for years. Basically, a giant snail-circle-jerk with nom resolution, while health care continues to become more unaffordable and infrastructure crumbles. The only people happy about this are the infantile Randites who stick with their ‘the free market will save us’ belief with religious feavor while corporate raiding parties continue to fleece the American consumer.

Welcome to Shithole Nation, the new reality t.v. show starring Donald Trump! “You’re fucked!” is the new catchphrase.

Stranger

It’d never get that far. It’d be struck down by a federal court, and a lot more easily than the immigration ban was.

Right. The second, fifth, and 14th amendments come to mind to prevent it, and I’m not even a lawyer.

Isn’t this what Obama was always accused of wanting to do?

2017: Trump is Hitler! We must resist!
2018: Trump wants to eliminate fundamental due process rights! That’s awesome!

Trump is more like Pineapple Face. He’s far more suited to a banana republic than a world power.

The man seems so incompetent that I’m sure the gun control advocates are now putting their head in their hands and crying “shit no Donald!, for gods sake don’t be on our side”.

Knee-jerk populist proclamations are use no neither man nor beast. Do it properly with due consideration and process, then it’ll stand a chance of passing. On his track record thus far does anyone think Trump is capable of that?

If he holds to it, it will be interesting to see if he starts to eat at his dependable 30% approval rating.

He’s already forgotten that he said it. He was saying what he thought would win the room in that moment.

In this administration, the President’s words shouldn’t be treated as meaningful statements of policy.

That is true. Rather, they should be treated as symptoms of a transient ischemic attack.

Holy crap, if Obama said this Pennsylvania Avenue would be overflowing with sheets, burning crosses, and tiki torches. What is alarming is the way this creature tries to think- legal processes may be ignored if it keeps me from doing what I want to do. As much as I’d love to melt down every gun in private hands, this must be done legally.

I have a wild suggestion. Why don’t we make sane gun control laws that will close all the loopholes but leave responsible gun owners in peace? The extremists on both sides need to be ignored while the sane among us create exactly that kind of scenario.

It’ll be walked back. Sarah Sanders today will explain that what he really meant was that the NRA’s recommendations for more mental health screening should be implemented and that the fake news media blew this out of proportion.

Saw a good quote in the NY times article about this.

That about sums it up. Nobody on Capitol Hill takes anything he says seriously. The GOP is happy to take advantage of his parroting when it suits them and equally happy to ignore it otherwise.

Of course, it was just Trump riffing on his rectal harmonica. Still, I imagine there were a few drops of flop sweat on some GOP foreheads.

My prediction is that Congress will refine the Manchin-Toomey gun control proposal, removing the concealed carry reciprocity poison pill and adding an age limit and possible new assault weapons requirements, if not an outright ban.

Manchin and Toomey will make an appointment to present it to the President. They will go to the meeting only to find a couple of hard core gun nut advisors and NRA reps there as well. Trump will call the bill a gun-grabbing piece of shit while personally insulting Manchin and Toomey.

Then nothing more will happen.
